I am so far! Once I figure out file download stuff for the client I'm using, and find some more boards which have the kind of stuff I'm looking for (or people to talk to) I'll be set!

Yeah - social media is not something I care for. I see too many people
(my wife included) swipe - swipe - swipe away. Now that's fine if that's what someone wants to do. Heck I'm 'swiping' through messages on echonets, but it's much easier to avoid the drama here. :-)

Yeah. It was the whole addictive nature to it I deeply disliked; the shallow drama... I just had to get off. Now I'm only really on Discord on servers with people I know, lol. But Discord is going downhill, so who knows how long I'll stay on there (friends and I have joked about using Slack instead, lmao).

I use Slack for my Car Wars and Gaslands PBEM games now. :-) I am subbed
on some Discord, but don't 'hang out' there.

As for the shallow drama and such, you are right on target! And at least
with BBS's you have to TYPE to express yourself! No quick 'like' or
heart or whatever. And if you want to say something, you have to

well everything in moderation. and i think some peole just shouldnt use social media. they think they are some celebrity or people want to know every single thing about them. i have a female fb friend who just tries to get attention and i mess around with her about it. vague posts or complaining about her 20hr a week job. some people use it to argue with people about politics.

microsoft bought discord, right? do you know of any plans that ms has?
i'm not a fan of discord. i just run my own irc server and i use telegram.
i have a telegram gateway so when people post stuff on telegram it gets self hosted and a url is provided for irc users

Do you mean 8 MB for the soundfont? As Windows 98 was a 32-bit OS, it would have only been able to handle 4GB (and Google says it actually only supported up to 1GB of RAM).
Ah, yeah. I meant that, lol. Sorry

My first build a 486DX, 33mhz system. I remember being nervous as hell, particularly when I was installing the CPU (careful you don't bend the pins, make sure it's oriented correctly, only use a dab of thermal paste!). Once I got past that, everything else was a breeze.

For me, "plug and play" ment plugging the power cord into the wall and praying nothing blew up. When that didn't happen and I heard the "DING" followed by the BIOS msgs, I was thrilled ("Yes! Yes! YEEEESSSS!").

okay, listen to the master here.

make sure you only run it ssl and use a very non standard port.

once i did ssl only i really lost all my constant attackers. there's some weird shit out there. there's bot nets and those supernets spammers. there's also this one that goes around and creates bridge via relay bots on other irc networks. i'm not sure if that one is still around.

also if you are running on a hosted server they're probably not going to like that you are running an irc server due to botnets.

it might be better and more fun (media linking) to run a private telegram channel.

    I did...

however I guess my "first build" was not really a build but rather a modification to my original IBM PC in 1985. I replaced the 8088 CPU with a NEC v20 and replaced one of the full height floppies with a 10mb hard disk and added an AST card to expand the memory to a whopping 640k. What a beast...
