quick simple question, when logged in and browsing messages can I see a list of messages in the particular area or do I have to just read through all?

With the basic message reading prompt, you essentially read through all of them, though you jump to a particular message number and such (hit ? for help and you'll see some options).

There's also this, which might do what you want:

And this, which may already be in your xtrn directory:

This is really the wrong area for Synchronet related questions, but the answer is yes, of course, hit '?' for a menu. You should see the useful 'T' and 'L' commands listed.

When you're at the message prompt, hit the '?' key (like it says

probably want the 'L' command...

Once you're in the message board at the first message prompt you can hit T to see the next 10 messages.
