We get a local weekly print paper to keep aware of what's going on in
town since we can't get the town cable channel (don't have cable
service for the tv). Other than that, I read the Raleigh N&O on line.

Steve enlisted in the Army just as they were beginning to phase out the C-Rats in favor of the MREs. He brought a few C-Rats home for us to explore, more MREs when we moved to Frankfurt am/Main and a unit that
was out in the field quite often. Our girls thought the MREs were something great when they (girls) were younger; I understand the post
Gulf War I supply is much improved over the initial ones.
We had a store (long gone now) downtown that sold surplus C-rats. They were very popular with campers and outdoors folks.
Not sure where this guy got them but he had several cases (24 Meals
per) of MREs for sale at the Raleigh Hamvention this spring. Steve came home with a case-----just in case we need to do a quick "get out of
Dodge, bad weather's coming" hitch up the camper and beat feet.

My local daily got conglomerated by Gannet (USA Today) and has become
a joke. We have a 40+ year old weekly (also available on-line) that
keeps me abreast of what I need to know. For national/world news I
have on-line subscriptions to both New York Time and Washington Post.

I looked at the expected track for Erin. You're gonna get wet. Bring
your umbrella.
This looks like a dandy if you like maple syrple - I'd use B'/rer
Rabbit dark molasses in its place.

We usually catch the national/world news on tc, and can get the weather reports. Looks like we will escape the current hurricane; it's taking
an eastward bend. Beaches will have rip current dangers but probably
not even wind/rain there and we're further inland.

Actually, not really. Looking at the expected path, it's supposed to
turn eastward and not even give us mush, if any, rain.

That's you. For some reason I have never cared for "tree blood". Be it
on panquakes, or as an ingredient is sauces or even in candy. I've participated in making maple syrup, etc. and it's kinda neat. But something in the flavour just puts my teeth on edge.

This time around, yes. Located where we are, we usually don't get major effects from a coastal storm, usually more rain (which produces local flooding) and wind. Last fall's Helene gave us rain, but not as bad as even a couple of hours west of us.

Right now it's a warm (mid 80s), somewhat muggy day. Not much rain expected this week, even with the hurricane.

Since I can't print Fido from this computer, I looked it up at the
source and printed it, will probably try it this fall.

We were in Hawaii when that hit--but out there at one point one summer,
we had 5 hurricanes coming at us. There was enough ocean between us and them that they all fizzled out before hitting land.

I'm using an HP, not quite as small as a net book or tablet, not quite
as big as a full on laptop. In a way, it is a lap top as I just curl up
in a recliner with the computer on my lap.

Aren't Pacific hurricane called "typhoon" (from "tai fun" or"supreme wind")
I can recommend "Typhoon" byJoseph Conrad for your reading pleasure.

I have three Asus EEE PCs that I have picked up over the years. Mostly
I use them as jukeboxes - playing music while I work on something.

We had a couple of them at one point; Dale suggested them when we
thought Steve was going to be deployed. It was something easy to use
and with both of us having one, if I developed a problem, he could
trouble shoot. Turned out, he never deployed so we eventually moved on.
In 2020, we donated them (and others) to the school system so students
who were trying to learn remotely on phones could have something
better.

Schools are finding that they need ban phones in the classrooms if
they want their pupils to learn.

I'll see if I can get it for my Nook; we're running short of book shelf space.

True, but 5 years ago when everything was shut down tight and parents wanted to have their children continue their learning, teaching thru
Zoom was really big. Some kids had no computers at home but a parent
might have a smart phone that the kid could use. Teachers quickly found out that phone screens were not as good as PC screens so around here, a lot of appeals were put out for used but still useable computers. We contributed the EEPCs (eeps's) and some others we had, after Steve
cleaned them up, put on some basic work programs, etc. Helped us (a bit more room, soon to be replaced by radio equipment) and helped several
kids learn better.

My Asus all use Linux for the OS. If I'm doing Zoom I'd rather use my Lenovo Think/Idea Pad w/the built-in camera and microphone.
It's also handy if I am hospitalised. Since I network my Meal Monster
with the desktop tower my recipe bases are pretty much up to date.
