Anyone who's got bbs files or the bbs archives (like me) has this. If you
want a web site, https://foolsquarter.com/bbs/files.html has them.

That's weird. I thought wildcards would work... It might take a little

you can FREQ individual filenames, if you've got the time to test.

Yeah, I couldn't get allfix to work with magic and freq-u seems to have an unconfigurable limit. You can try the wget command with more luck. I show
    a 1337 and 2 as the zones.

Weird, the request shows the latter. I don't know why it's
    reporting
    the
former. It's not very configurable. Any way, it is working,
    thank
    you.

BTW.. ALLFILES did not produce anything:

20 Jun 06:41:52 FREQ Processing File Request From
    2:221/1.58@fidonet
20 Jun 06:41:52 FREQ File Request: ALLFILES 20 Jun 06:41:52 FREQ Sending c:\ele\download\allfiles.txt 20 Jun 07:09:21 FREQ End

Not sure what caused the error. I can dig into this some more if it become chronic. All I can say is try again and don't abort. It's a huge file and my internet is slow.

Well, that's two of us that couldn't get it. Is that chronic?

Aug couldn't get it because he didn't wait long enough. You couldn't get it because of some oddity with your nodes. If you allowed all of your nodes to send to you without passwords, it would have worked. It's either a bug with binkd or sbbs, I'm not sure which. It's not freq-u as it doesn't have
anything to do with the node list. It just takes what sbbs and binkd send
    it.

I think it's because freq-u has to go through so many directories, I'm really not sure. I know it takes a while.

generally speaking, the files list should already be built... most do this during midnight maintenance and they may archive it... in today's world, though, archiving a single text file is not really needed as most all transport over the 'net compresses on the fly for the ride on the wire... the receiver automatically uncompresses the arriving data and there you go...

dose FREQ-U not have a text index file where you list the magic filenames and the specific file(s) with their path?? the only time a request processor should go walking through the files areas is when files without magic names are requested... ALLFILES generally should point directly to your raw text files list or the archive of it...

    eg:
    ALLFILES D:\bbs\files\new\allfiles.txt
    ALLFILESZIP D:\bbs\files\new\allfiles.zip

some request processors also have some mode where they index all the files (during maintenance) so they know exactly where each file is located... with the index, they can jump directly to the file being requested and get it queued for transmission... FREQ-U may not be suitable if one's available files areas are too large... or maybe it needs an indexing function?

I think it's because freq-u has to go through so many directories, I'm really not sure. I know it takes a while.

when I ran a bbs, all the magic names pointed to files that already existed. So, if there was an ALLFILES|FILES it would point to allfiles.zip which was the directory listing of the files collection and produced ahead of time.

I see that )\/(ark explained the mechanism.

It does, and it finds it immediately, but it still has to walk through all of the files for some reason. It's not very smart. My only alternatives are allfix or freq-u. Freq-u takes forever, but I can't get allfix to use magic names.

    eg: ALLFILES D:\bbs\files\new\allfiles.txt ALLFILESZIP D:\bbs\files\new\allfiles.zip

It doesn't have an indexing function. This is a BBS utility, it hasn't been updated in decades!
