I've absorbed the increase. Overall, Spotify is a fine
service. But the jump from 9.99 to 12.99 was not nice.

...I've never really used streaming services.

Considering the abundance of free music online, I never felt the need to pay a services for it, but I do use a few services: I Heart Radio, Pandora, Soma FM and Tune-in. What's nice is that all these are available through my Echos.

My wife has Spotify but I don't use it. If I want to listen to
something I can find it on youtube or random stuff on the services you
mention, plus I have a large CD collection ripped to my computer so I
    can hear what I like.

I revisit the free ones from time to time. But the content
isn't always up to par with what known and highly successful
    musicians seem to produce.

Spotify's AI experiments with different ways of presenting new
music. Sometimes it's spot on (pun intended) and sometimes not
    so much.

Spotify also comes in handy when I want to discover and compare
all the cover versions of a particular song and just play them
all in a row. It's fun to find a cover version that truly is a
work of art that may otherwise go missed.

Huh! Interesting. How does that work exactly?

The speakers use WIFI to connect to your modem/router. You use the Alexa app (iPhone or Android) to configure the connection as well as the various services (a.k.a., "skills") to your Echo. So I have skills setup for services I mentioned. By default, it's setup for Amazon Music.
