Canon reportedly U-turns on price drops for two of its most popular cameras
and it could be the tip of the tariffs iceberg

    Description:
Canon has reportedly canceled some planned price cuts for two of its most affordable cameras. Here's why it could be just the start of an expensive
    year for photographers.

    FULL STORY

If you're a tech fan, it's hard to escape worries about US tariffs right now and cameras may have just experienced their real-world impact for the first time with the reported cancellation of some planned Canon price drops.

The reliable Canon Rumors says it's been told that "price drops that were scheduled for May on both the EOS R7 and EOS R10 have been canceled in the United States". Annoyingly for anyone who's been planning to buy an
affordable mirrorless camera, it was also told that "the price drops were
    going to be significant."

On the plus side, if you live in the UK or EU, Canon Rumors says its source
has claimed that the Canon EOS R7 and EOS R10 price drops "are still
    scheduled to happen."

That could change, but it's another sign of the significant geographical variances we might see this year regarding discounts and pricing.

Of course, nothing is certain right now, and if the USA and Japan did come to an arrangement that reduced the impact of the tariffs, the situation could change. However, as things stand, the Canon EOS R10 (which we still rate as
the best camera for beginners ) and its mid-range EOS R7 sibling won't be as temptingly affordable as they might have otherwise been this year.

Unfortunately, this will likely be just the start of another rollercoaster
year for camera fans... Analysis: It might get a lot worse USA Price Updates! Due to new tariffs, most of our US prices have increased. Please check our US web site for details. Prices in other countries are currently unchanged. https://t.co/w40IiwMA02 April 6, 2025

Clearly, missing out on potentially big camera price drops isn't great, particularly if you've been thinking of getting a new EOS R7 or EOS R10. But
if the early signs are any indication, things could soon get much worse, particularly in the US.

Over the weekend, Blackmagic posted the notice above, confirming that its US prices had been increased "due to new tariffs." In some cases, the rise was pretty dramatic, with the new Blackmagic Pyxis 12K G2 seeing its tag hiked by 32%.

Is that a sign of things to come from other camera manufacturers? While it's hard to predict anything with real certainty right now, it's certainly possible. A lot of Canon's manufacturing takes place in Japan (hit with a 24% tariff), while Nikon's mid-range equipment is made in Thailand (which
    currently has a 36% tariff).

Unless we see some rapid trade deals that reduce these tariffs, it's fair to assume that many camera bodies, lenses, and accessories perhaps most will become much more expensive this year.

If that happens, we can expect to see used prices rise, too, as the number of bargain hunters increases and pre-tariff supply starts to dwindle. In other words, it might become a good time to delay your next camera upgrade or at least reframe the situation as a relief from gear acquisition syndrome (otherwise known as GAS in camera circles).

It's time to brace ourselves for a rocky ride.

I hate to say this Mike, but you seem to be the boy crying wolf all the
    time.

I understand you want to keep everything under scrutiny, but sometimes
you have to wait for things to pan out at least a little while before
    screaming murder.

Sorry, but that reminded me of "Luther" in the Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

I post these articles here because I am pretty sure most participants don't watch any new (as they have admitted to as much). I don't necessarily
agree with all of their contents, only that they are relevant.

If you read them all, you will find that some are not critical of the
current administration and, if you go back far enough, you will find plenty that were critical of the Biden administration. Relevance is the only
thing I am looking for in them.

Not everything is political. Canon point-and-shoot cameras are making a comeback, and people are paying absurd prices for used models - almost
    as much as new!

If I had someone paying attention to trends, I wouldn't drop prices
either - especially if I could blame tariffs.

    I'm glad I kept most of my digicams - have a Canon S100, SD110, Elph 110
HS, and a handful of others as well. I may sell off a couple of
unsuspecting hipsters who want that 2000s low-fi look.

Hi Kurt! At the risk of being 'off topic', I am a Canon camera buff and
I own 5 of them. The only digital one is an SX110is. The others are 35mm
    SLR's from the late 70's early 80's.

Thanks for interjecting! I appreciate your view of current events.

Off-Topic we are! I have a Canonet QL17, 2 Canon FTbs (one black, one
chrome), and shot with a Canon AE-1 Program for several years. Great
    camera.

I found a guy nearby in Oakland, CA that did a CLA (clean, lube and
adjust) on the FTbs, and while he was in there, adjusted the meters to
use 1.5v silver oxide batteries instead of 1.5v mercury batteries.

Whoa! Brother's in arms! The FTb's were slightly before my time, but I have read they are excellent cameras. I have my original bought A-1, an AE-1, an AT-1 and an AL-1 QF (quick focus). Had them all CLA'd within
the last year and they all work perfectly.

Mechanical shutter, match-needle exposure, takes the same FD lenses as
the newer ones. The meter doesn't do great in super-low light, they had
an add-on meter booster that I've never seen in real life before.

Always wanted an A-1, winder and a 50/1.4...

As many of them involve tech, I would assume they are relevant to anyone
who'd be using a BBS. As they involve potential tariff outcomes, I would assume they'd be relevant to anyone who'd be reading a POLITICS echo on a
    BBS.

The mechanical shutter on the FTb is new for me, never used anything
that didn't require a battery for the shutter release. Alot of people
say that needing a battery to shoot is a detriment. Are you in need of

I thought one of the "oddball" A*-1s had a mechanical shutter, or at
least a 1/90th second shutter speed when the battery died. Oh, well...

Thanks for the offer, I'm set for now - on top of a handful of
Canon point and shoot, I started finding those twisty-body Nikon
Coolpixes - the 995 and 4300. They accept threaded filters, have lots
of manual controls and are fun to shoot. And, I always wanted one in
    2001 - and couldn't afford them!
