    Finally got around to replaceing one of the previously retired machines - two of them for those keeping score - for something more up-to-date and capable. Just under 17 minutes to compile and package.

    Without the need to compile it here, it took only about 3 minutes to install and reboot the machine. ;)

    $ cat /proc/version
    Linux version 6.16.5-arch1-1 (linux@archlinux) (gcc (GCC) 15.2.1 20250813, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.45.0) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu, 04 Sep 2025 23:18:13 +0000

    I must say, though, that 17 minutes for a kernel is getting a lot better now than the days of old, where it would take hours or even days. I remember glibc specifically, starting the compile before bed, wake up, go to work, come home and it was still compiling, only to fail at the end. It was absolutely irritating, and probably around the time I switched from Gentoo to Archlinux many years ago. ;)

    I don't work for my PC, it works for me!

    Maybe someday but I have my doubts.

    better now than the days of old, where it would take hours or even
    days.

    Actually I have managed it in just over 5 minutes but that was a specific kernel destined for a specific machine with all the unneeded device drivers etc turned off. Looking around at what I have currently working it probably could easily be achieved but then where's the fun in that?

    I remember glibc specifically, starting the compile before bed,
    wake up, go to work, come home and it was still compiling, only to

    Them were the days. Been there, done it.

    Slackware to LFS in my case. However it wasn't because of glibc. If I had to pick one annoying feature that caused the switch it would have to be vim.

    I don't work for my PC, it works for me!

    Both works best for me. Given my age and circumstances that may not be for much longer which only encourages me to keep it going ...
