    Hey August!

Exactly what distro are you using?

No distribution but instead a bastardized "Linux From Scratch" (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/). I've been doing this for about 25 years now. The last official distribution I ran was ttylinux, which was the very first x86_64 ttylinux if the truth be told.

    How about you?

No specific linux installation yet. I've only been using
different live-CD versions from time to time to test
compatibility and performance on the aging machines that I
have. If/when it comes down to it, I will probably use Mint on
    my Thinkpad T60.

I did try Manjaro 64bit on an old Dell desktop a few years ago,
and it performed quite quite will with the NVIDIA video and
supported the 64bit command-set support on basically just 4GB
ram max - but a 32bit OS might be more logical for that one.

    Hey August!

I've only been using different live-CD versions from time to time

I've known people that ran those as their default linux system(s). Personally I find them useful for a temporary boot to run maintenence and the such. I believe the first live cd was an early slackware, version 3.something-or-other. They also had a bootable zipdrive in just under 100M. As far as I am aware, slackware is still the best in this department.

supported the 64bit command-set support on basically just 4GB ram max

For a modern 16 penguin system with all the development tools/libs etc. 32G would be my minimum.

but a 32bit OS might be more logical for that one.

I disagree. If ram is the limitation then I would stick to the basics on that one but for sure would expect it to be pure 64 bit. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I wouldn't doubt it. But my use wouldn't be for developement,
but instead doing something useful on the linux machine! :D

Correction. It wasn't a 4GB ram limited Dell, it was an
eMachines model desktop. The CPU supported 64bit command set,
but the ram would be limited to just 4GB.

    Hey August!

doing something useful on the linux machine!

    Is there any other reason?

the ram would be limited to just 4GB.

That seems odd to me given what little I know about that particular machine. Is this a hardware limitation or did that machine only come with 4G or is it soldered onto the board? If it is possible to bump it up to 8G that would definetly make it more attractive. As is, it sounds more like a "because I can" project rather than a "something useful" project.

I'll try to remember to look up the emachines model number.

The pc has either only 2 or 4 slots, for a max 4GB on the mobo.

    Hey August!

    It's the T6528 model.

It seems that 4G is the maximum for that motherboard which, given the supplied AMD Athlon 64 3500+ cpu, is more than fine (ie 4G per penguin). Offhand it looks like an up-to-date linux ought to live fine on there, alsough I wouldn't expect it to be a good gaming or 4k streaming video or anything along that nature. A new Firefox might (probably) be an issue. Other than that it should be doable.

My biggest concern with these sorts of builds is power consumption. Given the limitations it is a real pig.
