    Isolated severe storms capable of mainly damaging winds appear
    possible Wednesday over parts of southern Georgia and Alabama, and
    over much of northern Florida. A few severe storms are also possible
    over the central High Plains late in the day.

    ...Southeast...
    The upper trough over the eastern states will generally weaken as
    the low occludes over the Northeast. A surface low will redevelop
    over the Atlantic, with drier air spreading southeast across much of
    the eastern seaboard behind a cold front.

    Southern portions of the cold front will proceed southward across
    GA, AL, and into FL, and the corridor immediately ahead of this
    front will have severe wind potential. Strong heating will occur
    while a ribbon of 70s F dewpoints are maintained. Tall instability
    profiles per forecast soundings and MLCAPE over 3000 J/kg will favor
    high echo tops and possible water-loaded severe downbursts. Shear
    will be weak, but the general northwest flow regime on the far
    southern periphery of the upper trough will aid southeastward storm
    motion and locally severe wind gusts during the afternoon.

    ...Northern/Central High Plains...
    A lee trough will develop over eastern MT/WY into the western
    Dakotas as a minor disturbance rounds the upper ridge and enhances
    deep-layer shear late in the day. Mid 50s to near 60 F dewpoints
    will contribute to up to 2000 J/kg MLCAPE, and lapse rates will be
    relatively steep through a deep layer. Storms are likely to form
    along the length of the surface trough across eastern MT and WY,
    with activity spreading eastward into the western Dakotas during the
    evening. The deeply mixed boundary layer should support strong
    outflow, which may be locally damaging. Sporadic marginal hail
    cannot be ruled out as well.

    Thursday afternoon into night across the northern and central Plains

    ...Synopsis...

    A series of vorticity maxima is forecast to pivot through the
    northern Plains and upper Midwest, within the northeast periphery of
    an upper high centered over the southern Rockies. At the surface, an
    area of low pressure initially over the western Dakotas will develop east-southeast to eastern SD or southern MN by Thursday night.
    Meanwhile, a trailing cold front will advance through the northern
    into central Plains.


    ...Northern and central Plains into the upper Mississippi Valley...

    Latest model guidance indicates the potential for multiple areas of
    showers and thunderstorms to be ongoing at 12Z Thursday, aided by
    forcing for ascent attendant to a lead disturbance aloft and
    low-level warm advection along a waning, nocturnal low-level jet.
    The extent and duration of the early-day convection will have
    implications for the degree of air mass destabilization by afternoon
    ahead of the cold front. Where stronger heating can occur, the
    presence of dewpoints in the 60s to low/mid 70s will yield a
    moderately to potentially strongly unstable air mass. However,
    vertical shear will tend to be limited by generally less than 30 kt
    of mid-level flow across the warm sector.

    Thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity
    through the afternoon along the cold front as well as any residual
    outflow boundaries from the morning convection. The models suggest
    the potential for upscale growth into one or multiple
    cold-pool-driven MCSs with the primary hazard being damaging wind
    gusts. Only 5% total severe probabilities will be included in this
    forecast due to uncertainty in the preferred corridor(s) of greater
    air mass destabilization and resultant severe weather threat. An
    upgrade to a Level 2/Slight Risk may become necessary once those
    details become more clear.

    On Thursday, the pattern will feature an upper trough over the East
    with filling low over the Northeast, and an upper high from the
    Southwest into the Four Corners states. In between, a modest
    northwest flow regime will exist over much of the Plains, with
    embedded disturbances forecast over the northern and central Plains.

    During the afternoon, a surface trough will develop from eastern MT
    into the OK/TX Panhandles, where strong heating will occur. A
    pre-frontal trough will also develop from SD into MN ahead of a cold
    front trailing southwestward out of Ontario. This area may be
    favorable timed with a weak wave moving around the upper ridge, and
    storms that form within the surface trough will be capable of
    sporadic severe hail or wind given 2000+ MUCAPE and deep-layer shear
    around 30 kt. Possible early day thunderstorms complicate the
    forecast setup, but a Slight Risk may eventually be added over the
    northern Plains as predictability increases.

    ...Synopsis...

    A vigorous short-wave trough over the upper Midwest into the mid MO
    Valley Friday morning will progress into the mid MS Valley with a
    belt of 30-35 kt mid-level flow forecast within the western through
    southern periphery of that feature. In the low levels, a surface low
    is expected to deepen slightly while developing through IA into
    west-central IL with a north-south-oriented warm front preceding the
    cyclone. Meanwhile, a trailing cold front will move through the
    lower MO Valley and Ozark Plateau with the western extension of the
    boundary advancing through the southern High Plains.


    ...Mid Mississippi Valley into the Ozark Plateau...

    Showers and thunderstorms are expected to be ongoing Friday morning
    ahead of the surface low from central and eastern IA into MO within
    a zone of warm advection and moist transport along a 30-40 kt
    low-level jet (LLJ). The LLJ will be maintained through the forecast
    period ahead of the surface-850 mb low with the same processes
    likely sustaining showers and thunderstorms near and to the east of
    the associated warm front/moisture discontinuity. A zone of enhanced
    low-level shear will coincide with the LLJ axis; however, it remains
    unclear whether sufficient surface-based destabilization will occur
    within the narrow warm sector over the mid MS Valley for a tornado
    threat to materialize.

    Isolated severe storms appear more probable along and ahead of the
    cold front over the Ozark Plateau Friday afternoon into evening,
    where a wider and more unstable warm sector is expected to reside.
    The presence of a vertically veering wind profile with modestly
    strong low-level and deep-layer shear may be sufficient for some
    storm organization and an associated damaging wind and possible
    tornado threat. Only a 5% probability and level 1/Marginal Risk will
    be included in this forecast due to uncertainty in surface-based
    storm coverage.


    ...Central and southern High Plains...

    Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms appear possible Friday
    afternoon into evening within a moist and moderately unstable
    post-frontal upslope regime. Sufficient deep-layer shear is forecast

    Broadly cyclonic flow will remain across the north-central US on
    D3/Wednesday, with an embedded short-wave trough and associated
    mid-level jet streak moving through the mid and lower MO Valley. At
    the surface, a cold front will extend from the Great Lakes back
    westward into the Mid-Missouri Valley and south and west into the
    southern Great Plains.

    ...Lower Missouri/mid Mississippi Valleys into eastern Kansas...
    Elevated storms are likely to be ongoing at the start of the D3
    period across portions of NE and IA into southern WI and northern
    IL. The evolution of this convection and resulting outflows will
    likely have impacts on placement of the front by the afternoon. This
    leads to some uncertainty in where the best corridor will be for
    renewed storm development by the afternoon. Nonetheless, guidance
    suggests that a corridor of moderate to strong instability will
    develop across portions of central Missouri/eastern Kansas. The
    strongest shear remains mainly parallel to and along and north of
    the cold front. Lapse rate profiles across central/northern Missouri
    are poor, but a more favorable convection free air mass with steep
    low to mid-level lapse rates will exist further south of the front
    into south-central/southern Missouri and across eastern Kansas. This
    narrow region of more favorable overlap of shear/instability/lapse
    rates may support isolated supercell development and potential for
    large hail, damaging winds, and perhaps a tornado.

    ...Southern Arizona...
    Convection will build again across the high terrain in southern
    Arizona D3/Wednesday before dropping southward into the lower
    deserts. While deep-layer shear will remain relatively weak, the
    presence of a deep, well-mixed boundary layer will support the
    potential for isolated severe wind gusts during the afternoon into
    evening.

    ...Northeast New Mexico into the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandles...
    Convective development is expected across the Sangre de Cristo
    Mountains and adjacent Raton Mesa Wednesday afternoon. Guidance
    suggests convection may also develop to the east across the OK/TX
    Panhandles, with potential for convection to grow upscale and
    potentially move across the Texas Panhandle and collide with
    convection out of eastern New Mexico. Given the hot/dry/well mixed
    air mass to the south of the front, this may pose a conditional risk
    for strong to severe wind and expansion of the 5% area was
    warranted.

    across the northern Plains, with various embedded features within
    the southwest flow from the central Plains into the Northeast.

    At the surface, areas of weak low pressure may develop over the
    central High Plains, and over the Dakotas and northern MN. Surface
    features are forecast to remain relatively weak, but the combination
    of moisture convergence near the weak front from southern KS into MO
    and moderate MUCAPE may support a few clusters of storms with
    locally strong gusts late in the day.

    A few stronger storms may also occur into northern MN late as a cold
    front moves in from the west, but instability will likely become
    elevated in nature near/after 00Z.

    Otherwise, a broad area of moisture and modest CAPE values will
    exist over much of the East, with weak shear. However, midlevel
    southwesterlies nearing 30 kt may support a few clusters of storms
    developing during the afternoon with locally strong gusts.

    Given low predictability, will defer any potential small Marginal
    Risk areas for later updates.

    the Lower CO Valley into the southern Rockies. Within that pattern,
    there is a model signal that a low-amplitude disturbance and
    associated mid-level wind maximum will move through the mid MO
    Valley Tuesday night. At the surface, a front will progress through
    portions of the upper Great Lakes with the boundary trailing
    southwest through the mid MO Valley to an area of low pressure over
    the central High Plains.


    ...Southeast Arizona...

    A similar setup to that on Monday is expected Tuesday afternoon with
    a deep, well-mixed boundary layer and moderate instability enhancing
    downdraft potential as storms move into the lower desert. Slightly
    stronger easterly mid-level flow may boost deep-layer shear to
    around 30 kt, potentially leading to some cold pool organization and
    an associated threat for a few severe wind gusts.


    ...Mid Missouri Valley...

    Elevated thunderstorms may be ongoing Tuesday morning north of the
    surface front with the potential for lingering clouds to limit air
    mass destabilization in some areas. A corridor of moderate
    instability may develop south of the front by afternoon from
    northeast KS into southern IA; however, the absence of appreciable
    forcing mechanisms leads to considerable uncertainty in whether any surface-based storms will develop during the daylight hours.

    There is a greater confidence in elevated storm potential Tuesday
    night north of the front with the approach of the mid-level
    disturbance. While there is some model variance with respect to the
    degree of elevated instability, the general consensus is for MUCAPE
    less than 1000 J/kg with poor mid-level lapse rates. Thus, despite
    the presence of seasonably strong vertical shear, the marginal
    thermodynamic environment is currently expected to limit severe
    weather potential.


    ...Central High Plains...

    Model differences in the boundary-layer structure within the
    post-frontal upslope along with the presence of a cap centered
    around 600 mb lead to uncertainty in surface-based storm development
    and sustenance Tuesday afternoon and evening. Should storms develop,
    the presence of 30-40+ kt of deep-layer shear would support some
    severe weather threat. However, confidence in that scenario is
    currently too low to include a 5% probability contour.

    in thunderstorm development across the high terrain in southeastern
    Arizona. Strengthening flow aloft will provide increased deep layer
    shear for organization across the region. A deeply mixed and
    moderately unstable air mass across the lower desert will support
    potential for one or more clusters moving off the high terrain which
    will be capable of damaging wind through the afternoon.

    ...Mid-Missouri Valley...
    Several rounds of widely scattered thunderstorm activity is expected
    across the Mid-Missouri Valley Tuesday. Elevated thunderstorm
    activity will likely be ongoing near the start of the period near
    the surface front. A corridor of moderate instability may develop
    south of the front by afternoon from northeast KS into southern IA;
    however, the absence of appreciable forcing mechanisms leads to
    considerable uncertainty in whether any surface-based storms will
    develop during the daylight hours. Better chances for development
    will arrive with a shortwave trough passage late in the period. Poor
    lapse rates and marginal instability leads to low confidence in
    severe potential overnight, but a few stronger storms may produce
    gusty winds and small hail given strong deep layer shear profiles.

    the early-day storms into afternoon. Associated outflow may modulate
    the position of the synoptic front with lingering clouds limiting
    instability in some areas. Consensus of model guidance indicates the
    corridor from eastern KS into west-central IL as being the most
    probable location for moderate to strong instability by afternoon.
    That area will coincide with the southern fringe of stronger
    deep-layer shear oriented largely parallel to the front, suggesting
    the potential for at least isolated severe weather during the
    afternoon through evening. Only a 5% probability contour has been
    included in this forecast due to uncertainties in the specific
    location of the effective surface front.

    Similar to previous days, diurnally enhanced thunderstorms are
    expected to form over the Gila Mountains with subsequent
    south/southward movement into the lower desert, where a moderately
    unstable environment is expected to reside. While deep-layer shear
    will remain relatively weak, the presence of a deep, well-mixed
    boundary layer will support the potential for isolated severe wind
    gusts during the afternoon into evening.

    ...SUMMARY...
    Isolated occurrences of mainly damaging winds are possible from the
    Lower Great Lakes into the Carolinas and parts of Georgia Sunday
    afternoon and evening. A more conditional severe risk exists across
    parts of North Dakota into far northwest Minnesota late Sunday
    afternoon into night.

    ...Upper Ohio Valley to Southeast...

    The base of an upper trough initially extending from the Ohio Valley
    to the Gulf Coast will stall over the OH/TN Valley vicinity on
    Sunday. Meanwhile, the northern portion of the upper trough will
    lift northeast across the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast. This will
    result in generally weakening midlevel south/southwesterly flow from
    GA into the Lower Great Lakes. Nevertheless, a very moist
    boundary-layer will reside across the region ahead of a weak surface
    front. Surface dewpoints in the mid 60s to low 70s will support
    generally 500-1250 J/kg MLCAPE. Strong destabilization will be
    limited by early day/ongoing convection, cloud cover and poor lapse
    rates. Nevertheless, sufficient vertical shear will support
    transient organized cells/clusters, particularly where any pockets
    of strong heating occurs. Damaging wind gusts will be the main
    hazards with thunderstorms through early evening.

    ...North Dakota...

    A very conditional environment for severe storm development will
    exist across central/eastern ND and vicinity on Sunday. An amplified
    upper ridge over the region will result in warm midlevel
    temperatures and capping through the period. As an upper shortwave
    trough tracks across the northern Rockies and into the Canadian
    Prairies, height falls will overspread the northern Plains beginning
    around 00z. Meanwhile, a surface cold front will shift east across
    the northern High Plains and western ND during the afternoon, before
    stalling across central ND into western SD overnight. While
    surface-based convection seems unlikely, warm advection ahead of the
    surface front could result in sporadic elevated convection. Steep
    midlevel lapse rates and moderate elevated instability amid
    increasing westerly flow aloft could support a risk for hail. Storm
    development is uncertain, but will maintain the conditional Marginal
    (level 1 of 5) risk for now.

    ...Synopsis...

    A vigorous short-wave trough and attending mid/upper-level jet
    streaks initially over the northern Rockies Monday morning will
    progress through the northern Plains and the upper MS Valley. At the
    surface, an area of low pressure is expected to develop from western
    SD into northern MN, along a cold front advancing through the
    northern Plains and upper MS Valley. The southern extension of the
    front will push into the central High Plains.

    Elsewhere, a short-wave trough will progress through northern New
    England within the base of a trough situated over QC. That mid-level
    system will be associated with a surface front that will move
    through the Northeast.


    ...Northern and central Plains into the upper Mississippi Valley...

    Thunderstorms may be ongoing at 12Z Monday across portions of ND
    within the leading edge of height falls preceding the mid-level
    trough. In the wake of the early-day storms, steep lapse rates and a
    relatively moist boundary layer will combine with daytime heating to
    yield a moderately unstable but capped air mass by afternoon ahead
    of the cold front. Renewed thunderstorm development is anticipated
    at that time along the cold front across eastern ND into northwest
    MN, where stronger dynamic forcing for ascent should erode the cap.
    There, forecast soundings indicate vertically veering wind profiles
    with steadily strengthening low-level and deep-layer shear,
    supportive of supercells and bowing structures capable of mainly
    large hail and damaging winds. Potentially larger
    temperature-dewpoint spreads and resultant higher LCL heights may
    curb the tornado threat to some extent.

    Storm development farther south along the front in SD and NE remains
    more uncertain due to capping concerns. Should storms develop, the
    environment would support the potential for isolated occurrences of
    severe wind gusts and perhaps some large hail.


    ...Southern New England into the Mid-Atlantic...

    The potential for early-day storms leads to uncertainty in the
    degree of air mass destabilization by afternoon along and ahead of
    the front moving south through the region. However, where stronger
    heating can occur, the presence of a moist air mass will support
    pockets of moderate instability by afternoon. Forcing within the
    right entrance region of an upper-level jet streak lifting through
    northern New England will combine with the front to yield an
    increase in storms through the afternoon within a kinematic
    environment featuring 30-35 kt of deep-layer shear. As such, a few
    strong to severe storms appear possible, with the primary hazard
    being damaging wind gusts.

    may be elevated, likely posing the best potential for a few
    instances of large hail. Behind morning convection, steep low to
    mid-level lapse rates and clearing should allow for a swath of
    moderate instability to develop across western North Dakota into
    northern Minnesota by the afternoon. Thunderstorm activity is
    expected to redevelop near the front during this time. Supercell
    wind profiles will be in place with potential for large hail and
    damaging wind. High LCLs will likely limit the tornado potential.

    The air mass further south across South Dakota into southern
    central/Minnesota will likely remained capped and free of morning
    convection. Stronger heating and moistening in this region may
    result in moderate to strong instability. A conditional threat for
    supercells will be possible, limited by remaining capping at the
    base of the EML through the afternoon. Should storms develop, the
    environment would support the potential for isolated occurrences of
    severe wind gusts and perhaps some large hail.

    ...Southern New England into the Mid-Atlantic...
    Storms will likely be ongoing at the start of the period across
    southern New England into the Mid-Atlantic, which leads to
    uncertainty in the degree of air mass destabilization by afternoon

    ...OH Valley southward into MS and AL...
    A shortwave trough will move from the mid MS Valley southeastward
    into the OH and TN Valleys on Saturday, with modest 25-30 kt
    midlevel southwesterlies developing ahead of it. At the surface, low
    pressure will move across southern IL and IN during the day, with a
    cold front extending southwestward across the lower MS Valley by
    late afternoon. A very moist air mass will exist ahead of the cold
    front, with 70s F dewpoints.

    Areas of early rain/storms are likely to be ongoing within the warm
    advection zone east of the low over IN/KY/TN, but southwest surface
    winds and heating will result in moderate instability redeveloping
    ahead of the cold front with MLCAPE averaging 2000-2500 J/kg. The
    front will easily support scattered storms by mid afternoon from IN
    southward into MS/AL. Marginal deep-layer shear combined with
    substantial moisture content should yield corridors of mixed-mode
    storms capable of damaging gusts and perhaps isolated marginal hail.
    A weak tornado or two cannot be ruled out where low-level winds are
    backed within the very moist/low-LCL environment, but overall it
    appears these would be brief.

    ...Much of eastern NM...
    Winds aloft will adjust to more of a northerly direction on
    Saturday, with a cold front plunging south into TX. Western portions
    of this front will extend into eastern NM, where 50s F dewpoints
    will remain, along with easterly surface winds.

    Midlevel lapse rates will be relatively steep, with the northerly
    flow regime resulting in around 40 kt deep-layer effective shear.
    This combination should support a few severe storms capable of hail
    or damaging gusts as storms develop over the higher terrain and move
    generally southward through the evening.

    A mid-level trough will advance slowly through the lower Great

    and Sunday night. Ahead of the trough, south-southwest winds in the
    mid levels will gradually strengthen through the forecast period. At
    the surface, an area of low pressure will develop from the mid into
    the upper OH Valley, while a trailing front edges east through the
    TN Valley and central Gulf Coast.

    Elsewhere, a seasonably strong short-wave trough is forecast to move
    through the Canadian Prairie Provinces with an associated belt of
    50-60 kt mid-level winds spreading from the northern Rockies into
    the northern Plains. At the surface, a cold front will advance into
    the northern Plains by Sunday afternoon into night.


    ...Lower Great Lakes into the Southeast...

    Showers and thunderstorms are expected to be ongoing Sunday morning
    from the lower Great Lakes into central Appalachians within a zone
    of warm advection and moisture transport along a low-level jet. Some
    of the early-day storms may linger into afternoon with associated
    cloud cover limiting air mass destabilization. Where cloud breaks
    can occur, increased daytime heating and boundary-layer dewpoints in
    the 60s to mid 70s will contribute to corridors of moderate
    instability, the highest confidence of which is from southern VA
    into the Savannah River Valley.

    Aided by forcing for ascent ahead of the mid-level trough,
    thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity
    through the afternoon, especially in areas of greater instability
    from the upper OH Valley into Carolinas. In general, storms may
    remain somewhat disorganized, posing mainly a damaging wind risk
    during the afternoon into evening. A possible exception is across
    the upper OH Valley, where stronger vertical shear will be
    supportive of organized storms modes, given sufficient
    destabilization.


    ...Northern Plains...

    Boundary-layer dewpoints in the 60s to 70s locally will coincide
    with steep low/mid-level lapse rates to yield a moderately to
    strongly unstable, but capped air mass by afternoon ahead of the
    front. The strongest forcing for ascent associated with the Canadian
    short-wave trough is expected to remain north of the international
    border, leading to uncertainty in whether the combination of daytime
    heating and frontal convergence will be sufficient to initiate
    surface-based storms.

    On the condition that storms develop and are sustained, the presence
    of 30-40 kt of deep-layer shear across the frontal zone will support
    organized storm modes, including supercells with an associated large
    hail and severe wind gust threat. That conditional risk will exist
    from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday night. However, given the
    uncertainty in storm development, only 5% probabilities will be
    included in this forecast.

    A very moist airmass (dewpoints in the low/mid 70s F) are expected
    across much of the East along the western periphery of the Atlantic
    surface high. Flow aloft will be somewhat enhanced near the Great
    Lakes trough, primarily for the northern Mid-Atlantic into parts of
    New England. Given the rich moisture, surface heating will not have
    to be overly robust to promote around or above 2000 J/kg MLCAPE
    despite weak mid-level lapse rates. Where steeper low-level lapse
    rates and/or clustering can occur, isolated damaging winds will be
    possible.

    ...Central/Northern Plains...
    Predictability continues to be low within these regions. In southern
    Kansas, the cold font, perhaps augmented by early day
    precipitation/clouds, will be one area of potential storm
    development during the afternoon. Temperatures to the south of the
    stalled boundary will be quite hot and may provide enough lift for
    initiation. Enough mid-level flow will be present to promote storm organization, should any form. Uncertainty in development remains
    too high for a categorical risk area.

    A secondary surface front is expected to develop from northern
    Nebraska into the eastern Dakotas and northern Minnesota. The ECMWF
    is much more aggressive with moisture return ahead of the boundary
    than the NAM. Furthermore, mid-level heights will likely be slowly
    rising through the period. A stronger storm or two would be
    possible, but development is still uncertain. Elevated storms are
    probable in northern Minnesota as the low-level jet increases, but
    buoyancy is expected to remain weak.

    temperatures aloft and 500 mb winds on the order of 30-35 kt. A weak
    surface trough may develop from Lake Superior southwestward into IA
    during the day, with eventual destabilization as southwest winds at
    850 mb increase to around 20 kt. Shear will not be particularly
    strong, but storms are likely late in the day into the overnight
    from WI into IA. While isolated severe gusts or hail cannot be ruled
    out, predictability issues preclude adding a risk area at this time.

    ...Upper Mississippi Valley...
    An intensifying mid-level jet is expected to move into the northern Plains/Upper Midwest during the afternoon. Convergence along a cold
    front should increase within Minnesota/western Wisconsin/Iowa. With
    around 40 kt of effective shear, supercell structures are possible
    at least initially. With time, convergence along the front may
    promote more linear storm modes with one or more organizing
    clusters/line segments. The zone of greater buoyancy will not extend
    much to the east into Wisconsin. There will be a reservoir of strong instability in parts of Iowa, however. A small MCS could organize
    and move southward into this airmass. Wind damaging will be the
    primary hazard, though large hail could occur with initial
    supercells.

    ...Upper Ohio Valley into Mid-Atlantic...
    Upper 60s to potentially mid 70s F dewpoints are forecast to remain
    across these regions into Friday. Stronger surface heating and
    temperatures at or above 90 F in some locations will support
    1500-2500 J/kg MLCAPE. Deep-layer shear across the
    Mid-Atlantic/Northeast is expected to be a bit weaker than on
    Thursday. Scattered thunderstorms are probable by the afternoon.
    Generally weak winds throughout the troposphere suggest locally
    pulse severe storms. Lack of greater organization precludes a risk
    area at this time.

    Stronger mid-level flow is forecast across the Upper Ohio Valley in
    association with the Great Lakes trough and possibly an MCV moving
    eastward. Models differ on the timing/strength of pertinent surface
    features during the afternoon. A zone of greater storm organization
    could develop from eastern Indiana into parts of central southern
    Ohio and northern Kentucky. Uncertainty remains too high for
    probabilities.

    ...Mid to Lower MO Valley...
    Moderate northwest flow aloft will persist across the northern
    Plains into the Great Lakes on Saturday, as the main upper wave
    rotates northeast from Ontario into Quebec. The southern periphery
    of this stronger flow aloft will remain over the middle to lower MO
    Valley, with a warm front developing across NE and IA. Strong
    heating will occur east of a surface low either in western NE or KS,
    with south winds resulting in a deep mixed layer by afternoon.

    Storms are expected to form over NE, and possibly move into IA or MO
    through evening in the form of an MCS. This would be fueled by a
    strengthening southerly low-level jet as well, suggesting an
    organized system may occur. For now, low probabilities have been
    added due to uncertainty with placement of any such corridor.
    Damaging winds would be the main concern.

    ...Mid Atlantic...
    Scattered afternoon storms will again be likely over much of the
    eastern states on Saturday, within a modest southwest flow regime. A
    high PW environment will remain in place, supporting an uncapped air
    mass and conditional/localized wind risk. Predictability is low at
    this time given possible antecedent rain or thunderstorm areas, but
    low probabilities for wind could be added in later updates.

    Models are in general agreement that convection will be ongoing
    early Saturday morning near the central South Dakota/Nebraska
    border. There is some potential for this activity to intensify as destabilization occurs in eastern Nebraska into Iowa during the
    afternoon. Moderate mid-level flow will extend into these regions.
    Strong heating to the south of a developing warm front/outflow
    boundary will lead to a strongly unstable environment. The two main
    questions for this forecast will be whether the early morning
    activity can develop enough of a cold pool to persist through the
    diurnally unfavorable morning time frame, and what the impacts from
    potential convection in Iowa on Friday will be. The overall setup
    and environment appear favorable for MCS development. Higher
    probabilities will likely be needed as confidence in the corridor of
    greater risk increases.

    ...Mid-Atlantic...
    Some potential for thunderstorms exists during the afternoon as a
    very moist and uncapped airmass will remain in place on Saturday.
    Mid-level flow will be stronger with northern extent with cyclonic
    flow aloft continuing over the Great Lakes/New England. Though
    widely scattered to scattered storms are probable, effective shear
    and mid-level lapse rates will be weak. Furthermore, mesoscale
    features aiding convective organization are not evident in model
    guidance. There may be an embedded perturbation within the flow
    aloft, but models differ on the location/intensity of these
    features. Uncertainty in storm severity remains high.

    the south of the front will be in the 60s and 70s F, which will
    contribute to the development of moderate instability. Large-scale
    ascent over this unstable airmass will remain relatively weak. In
    spite of this, isolated thunderstorms are expected to form in areas
    where low-level convergence becomes maximized. Model forecasts
    suggest that the most favorable locations could be near the front in
    South Dakota and from northeastern Nebraska into southern Iowa along
    the northern edge of the stronger low-level flow. In both of these
    locations, moderate to strong instability coupled with moderate
    deep-layer shear should be sufficient for a severe threat. Severe
    wind gusts will be the most likely hazard during the late afternoon
    and early evening with cell clusters or short line segments that
    move southeastward along and near the instability axis. Hail could
    also occur mainly in the central and northern Plains, where
    mid-level lapse rates will be steepest.

    activity. Steep mid-level lapse rates and 40-50 kt of effective
    shear on the western flank of the outflow would favor severe storms.
    Similar to Saturday, additional storms could form as the low-level
    jet intensifies Sunday night. Large hail would be the most likely
    hazard as these storms would tend to be slightly elevated.

    Farther west, storm development is much more uncertain. Warm
    temperatures aloft will lead to capping within the Plains. A surface
    low is forecast to develop which may provide local enhancement to
    convergence, but the location and strength of this feature varies
    model to model. Mid-level ascent will be subtle at best. The ECMWF
    is the most aggressive with afternoon development. That solution
    suggests development near the surface low/Black Hills with a
    southeastward moving complex. While an increase in probabilities
    would be needed in this scenario, confidence is not high.

    ...Maine...
    Moderate mid-level winds will continue across much of the Northeast.
    Ahead of a cold front, upper 60s to low 70s F dewpoints will support
    1500-2000 J/kg MLCAPE. Shear will be modest, but hodographs will be

    on Monday. At the surface, a quasi-stationary front is forecast to
    be located from northern Illinois eastward into northwestern
    Pennsylvania. Surface dewpoints to the south of the front are
    forecast to be in the 70s F, which will contribute to moderate
    destabilization by midday. Scattered thunderstorms appear likely to
    develop near the front by early afternoon, with the storms moving
    southeastward into the unstable air. To the south of the front,
    MLCAPE is forecast to peak in the 2000 to 3000 J/kg range. In
    addition, the models show moderate deep-layer shear in place which
    will most likely support a mixed mode, with supercells and short
    intense line segments capable of severe wind gusts. The severe
    threat could continue into the mid to late evening if a cold pool
    can become established and persist.

    ...Central and Northern Plains/Midwest...
    West-northwesterly mid-level flow will be in place over much of the north-central U.S. on Monday. At the surface, a low is forecast to
    deepen over South Dakota as a cold front moves through the northern
    Plains. To the south of the front, an axis of strong instability
    appears likely to develop by afternoon from northern Nebraska
    eastward into Iowa, where model forecasts suggest that MLCAPE could
    peak in the in the 3500 to 4500 J/kg range. In addition, forecast
    soundings show directional shear in the low to mid-levels, which
    will contribute to moderate deep-layer shear over much of the moist
    sector. This environment should support an isolated severe threat
    during the late afternoon and early evening. Due to relatively weak
    large-scale ascent, convective coverage is expected to be isolated,
    with any severe threat remaining localized.

    ...Midwest / OH Valley / Mid Atlantic...
    An elongated zone of damaging wind potential will exist on Monday
    from Illinois to the Mid Atlantic, with various clusters of storms
    throughout the period.

    Earlier in the day, it appears ongoing activity may be present
    around OH, with moderate 40+ kt midlevel westerlies pushing the
    activity toward the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon. There, it
    could encounter the destabilizing air mass, with possible new
    development and/or rejuvenation with damaging gust potential.

    Farther west, a large area of strong instability is forecast across
    the Midwest, with an east-west oriented boundary roughly from IA
    across northern IL/IN/OH. Parts of this boundary may be
    re-positioned depending on the extent of early day outflows.

    West to southwest 850 mb winds over 30 kt should help maintain
    low-level moisture/heat flux into the frontal zone, with new
    development most likely across the Slight Risk area from northern IL
    into OH. Corridors of damaging winds will be possible with the
    resulting clusters or MCS, possibly affecting northern KY into WV. Predictability remains fairly low or this pattern.

    ...Northern Plains...
    Low pressure is forecast to develop over the central Plain, while
    moisture and backed surface winds persist generally north of I-80.
    Strong heating and surface convergence should support afternoon
    development over western SD, and perhaps elevated storms later over
    ND. Isolated severe gusts or hail will be possible over SD and
    vicinity, perhaps into northern NE and western IA overnight. A
    targeted Slight Risk may be needed in later updates as
    predictability increases.

    ...Ohio Valley/Central Appalachians....
    At mid-levels, west-northwesterly flow will be in place on Tuesday
    from the northern Plains to the central and northern Appalachians.
    Along the southern edge of the stronger mid-level flow, a
    west-northwest to east-southeast corridor of moderate to strong
    instability is forecast to develop by afternoon. It appears that an
    outflow boundary from the previous day's storms will be located from approximately north-central Illinois east-southeastward into
    southern Ohio. Low-level convergence along this boundary will be a
    focus for convective initiation. In the afternoon, thunderstorms are
    expected to develop near the boundary and move east-southeastward
    into the stronger instability over the Ohio Valley. A cluster of
    strong to severe storms is expected, and MCS development will be
    possible across the region.

    Instability is forecast to be similar to the previous day, with
    MLCAPE peaking in the 2000 to 3500 J/kg range. According to the
    ECMWF, deep-layer shear may be a bit stronger with 0-6 km shear in
    the 30 to 40 knot range. This would support supercells and short
    intense line segments capable of severe wind gusts. The wind-damage
    threat would become maximized if a cold pool can develop during the
    late afternoon and early evening. The current thinking is that the
    ECMWF has a better handle on where the outflow boundary will be than
    other solutions, and the Slight Risk area has been placed favoring
    the ECMWF scenario.

    ...Central and Northern Plains/Midwest...
    West-northwesterly mid-level flow will remain over the north-central
    U.S. on Tuesday. At the surface, dewpoints in the 60s and 70s F from
    South Dakota and Nebraska eastward into Iowa will contribute to
    strong destabilization by afternoon. MLCAPE is forecast to peak
    above 4000 J/kg along parts of the moist axis by late afternoon. In
    spite of the instability, large-scale ascent is forecast to remain
    relatively weak. Isolated to scattered storms could still develop
    along zones of low-level convergence. The strong instability along
    with moderate deep-layer shear should support an isolated severe
    threat from mid afternoon to mid evening. Severe wind gusts and hail
    will be the primary threats. Due to the weak forcing, there is some
    uncertainty as to where the greatest convective coverage will be.

    ...From IL into western VA/NC...
    Bouts of strong to severe thunderstorms are expected Tuesday, though
    timing and position of the greatest threat corridor is uncertain.
    Areas of thunderstorms may be ongoing early on Tuesday across parts
    of the OH Valley region, and strong gusts cannot be ruled out at
    that time. Daytime heating and a weak surface trough may aid
    re-development across the Appalachians and into VA/NC, with
    deep-layer mean winds supporting mobile clusters of storms producing
    damaging gusts.

    Late afternoon and evening development should occur farther west as west/southwest boundary layer winds maintain a warm and unstable air
    mass into IL/IN/OH. The greatest threat of a damaging wind corridor
    appears to be in these areas, with MUCAPE over 3000 J/kg, and
    potentially 40-50 kt deep-layer shear. Depending on how mesoscale
    factors resolve, supercells will be possible, but the primary risk
    is expected to be potentially widespread damaging winds.
    Predictability is currently low, but categorical risk upgrades
    cannot be ruled out in later outlooks.

    ...Northern Plains...
    Storms are expected to develop late in the day over the western
    Dakotas near a surface trough over the High Plains. Southeasterly
    surface winds and 60s F dewpoints will yield moderate instability,
    and favorable 40-50 kt deep layer shear. The elongated mid to upper
    hodographs should aid supercell and hail potential, with bowing
    structures producing damaging wind during the evening.

    ...AZ...
    An easterly flow regime will persist on Tuesday, with scattered
    afternoon storms over the higher terrain moving generally westward.
    Locally damaging gusts may occur with the stronger outflows.

    the northern Plains into the Great Lakes. Within the flow, a subtle
    shortwave trough is forecast to move into the central and northern
    High plains during the afternoon. At the surface, a cold front is
    forecast to move southward in the central Plains, with a lee trough
    located in the High Plains. During the day, upslope flow will help
    low-level convergence to become maximized along the lee trough,
    which will the primary focus for convective initiation Wednesday
    afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected to form near the trough and
    move eastward across the central and northern High Plains during the
    late afternoon and early evening.

    Along the western edge of the moist airmass, surface dewpoints are
    forecast to be mostly in the 60s F, which should result in moderate
    instability by afternoon. Late afternoon forecast soundings from
    North Platte, Nebraska northward to east of Rapid City, South Dakota
    have 0-6 km shear in the 35 to 45 knot range with low to mid-level
    lapse rates near 8 C/km. This will support a supercell threat during
    the late afternoon and early evening. Supercells will be capable of
    severe wind gusts and isolated large hail.

    ...Mid Missouri and Mid Mississippi Valley/Ohio Valley/Southern
    Appalachians...
    Mid-level northwesterly flow will be in place on Wednesday from the
    Mid Missouri Valley into the Ohio Valley. At the surface, a very
    moist airmass will also be in place over this same area. Surface
    dewpoints in the 70s F will contribute to moderate to strong
    instability by afternoon. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will
    be possible near outflow boundaries as low-level convergence becomes
    maximized in the afternoon. Across much of this moist and unstable
    airmass, moderate deep-layer shear will be in place supporting an
    isolated wind-damage threat. The wind-damage threat should be
    greatest in the late afternoon and early evening as low-level lapse
    rates become steep.
