    Severe storms capable of strong to severe wind gusts and large hail
    are expected across the Great Lakes and Midwest through tonight.
    More sporadic occurrences of damaging wind are possible in the
    Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee Valley, central High Plains, and southeast
    Arizona.

    ...20z Update IL/IN...
    An evolving convective cluster across northern IL/IN and southern
    lower MI should continue to move south/southeast this afternoon.
    Low-level convergence is maximized along a weak CAPE/ThetaE gradient
    laying roughly near the IN/OH border. CAM guidance and observation
    trends suggest this may provide a focus for convection through this
    afternoon and evening gradually turning the cluster further
    southward. Moderate buoyancy and 40+ kt of deep-layer shear parallel
    to the boundary could support organized linear/bowing structures
    with severe/damaging gusts and perhaps some QLCS tornadoes possible
    across northern IN and possibly extending into western OH. However,
    leading stratiform and cloud cover could limit the eastern extent of
    the higher severe risk, and confidence in the convective evolution
    is very low.

    Additional development has been noted along the western flank of the
    complex over northern IL, with another cluster of storms exiting
    southern WI. It is possible that these new storms, and additional
    ascent tied to a westerly low-level jet will support a second
    cluster of severe storms eventually organizing and moving more south
    across IL/IN. Hot surface temperatures (90-95 F) and a very large
    reservoir of extreme buoyancy (MUCAPE 4000-5000 J/kg) extending into
    IL and western IN would support a risk for widespread
    severe/damaging gusts. Given the increased confidence in damaging
    winds this afternoon/evening, have shifted 30% wind probabilities
    farther south in IN.

    ...Central and northern High Plains...
    Scattered storms ongoing over the high plains should increase in
    coverage and intensity this afternoon. Steep mid-level lapse rates
    could promote severe wind gusts with stronger downdrafts, along with
    isolated hail. Minimal changes were made to the prior outlook, see
    MCD#1767 and MCD#1768 for more information.

    Additional scattered thunderstorms are ongoing over parts of the Mid Atlantic/Southeast and southern AZ. These storms should continue
    this afternoon with potential for sporadic damaging gusts owing to
    heavy water loading and moderate buoyancy. Limited vertical shear
    and only modest clustering suggest severe potential will remain
    isolated before diminishing overnight.

    ...Midwest/Ohio Valley...
    A large upper ridge remains present today over the central
    Plains/Rockies, with moderately strong northwest flow aloft from the
    Midwest into the OH Valley. A very moist and unstable low-level air
    mass resides from WI/IL into MI/IN/OH, where mostly clear skies will
    result in hot afternoon temperatures and MLCAPE values over 3000
    J/kg. Multiple clusters of intense thunderstorms are ongoing over
    parts of WI tracking southeastward. These storms will move through
    this reservoir of high CAPE, leading to the potential for an active
    severe weather event today. However, details of how these clusters
    evolve are uncertain.

    Vertical shear across this region will support supercell structures,
    capable of damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes this
    afternoon. However, the greater concern is if storms can congeal
    into a southeastward bowing system and that sweeps across Lower MI,
    eastern IL, IN, and western OH. Several morning CAM solutions
    indicate that risk, with storms spreading into KY overnight before
    weakening. Unfortunately, this synoptic pattern does not lend
    itself to a high-confidence convective forecast.

    ...High Plains...
    Widespread clouds are affecting parts of western NE this morning.
    However, strong heating will occur north and south of these clouds,
    leading to afternoon thunderstorms. The most active area will
    likely be over the Black Hills region where damaging winds and hail
    are possible. Farther south, widely scattered high-based
    thunderstorms will affect eastern CO/western KS with a risk of
    damaging wind gusts.

    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and hail are expected this
    evening across parts of the Ohio Valley. Additional storms with
    severe wind gusts are also expected from Lower Michigan southward
    into Ohio. A few strong gusts will also be possible in parts of the
    central Plains and in south-central Arizona.

    ...Ohio Valley/Great Lakes...
    On water vapor imagery, a mid-level shortwave trough is moving
    southward through the Ohio Valley. Ahead of this feature, a moist
    and unstable airmass is in place with surface dewpoints in the 70s
    and low 80s F. The RAP has a pocket of strong instability located
    from western Kentucky into southern Indiana, where MLCAPE is
    estimated in the 3500 to 4500 J/kg range. Scattered strong to severe
    storms are ongoing along the northern edge of the stronger
    instability, and the storms are being supported by large-scale
    ascent associated with the shortwave trough. In addition, the
    WSR-88D VWP at Louisville has 0-6 km shear of 30 to 35 knots
    suggesting a potential for organized severe storms will continue
    this evening. Severe wind gusts will be possible with supercells and
    short bowing line segments. The greatest coverage of severe is
    expected to be over southern Indiana and far northern Kentucky...see
    MCD 1774.

    Further north into Lower Michigan, scattered strong thunderstorms
    are ongoing ahead a subtle shortwave trough evident on water vapor
    imagery. Short-term model forecasts suggest these storms will expand
    in coverage and move southward across Lower Michigan into Ohio
    during the late evening and early overnight period. Along this
    corridor, the RAP has MLCAPE in the 1000 to 1500 J/kg range with 40
    to 50 knot of deep-layer shear. This should support a wind-damage
    threat with organized short line segments.

    ...Central Plains...
    At mid-levels, a subtle shortwave trough is currently moving over
    the top of a ridge in the central High Plains. Ahead of the
    shortwave trough, scattered strong thunderstorms are ongoing along
    the western edge of a pocket of strong instability. The RAP
    currently shows MLCAPE over central Nebraska in the 4000 to 5500
    range. Even though forecast soundings near the instability maximum
    have low to mid-level wind speeds generally less than 20 knots, the
    instability combined with very steep low-level lapse rates may be
    enough for isolated severe wind gusts for a few more hours this
    evening.

    ...Arizona...
    The latest surface analysis shows a sufficiently moist airmass in
    place over the southern half of Arizona, where dewpoints are mostly
    in the mid to upper 50s F. Within the moist air, the RAP has a
    pocket of moderate instability with MLCAPE in the 1500 to 2500 J/kg
    range. Thunderstorm have developed along the northern edge of the
    stronger instability. These storms will move westward across
    south-central Arizona this evening, and may pose a threat for severe
    wind gusts due to very steep low to mid-level lapse rates...MCD

    Thunderstorms with potential for severe wind gusts and a tornado
    threat are expected today from parts of the Mid-Atlantic southward
    into the Carolinas. A few severe gusts and hail may also occur over
    parts of the central High Plains.

    ...Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas...
    An upper-level trough will dig south-southeastward into the eastern
    U.S. today, as an associated cold front moves into the central
    Appalachians. Ahead of the front, a moist and unstable airmass will
    be in place from the Mid-Atlantic southward into the Carolinas.
    Surface dewpoints in the lower to mid 70s F will contribute to
    moderate instability by afternoon over much of the region.
    Convection is expected to first develop around midday in the higher
    terrain of northern Virginia and Pennsylvania. These storms are
    forecast to expand in coverage, moving southward through the
    remainder of Virginia into North Carolina during the afternoon.

    The strongest instability is forecast from southeastern Virginia
    into central North Carolina, where MLCAPE could peak around 3000
    J/kg. RAP forecast soundings near the instability axis suggest that
    0-6 km shear will be in the 40 to 50 knot range, supportive of
    supercells. In addition, 0-3 km storm-relative helicity is forecast
    to reach near 225 m2/s2 by mid afternoon, with the low-level shear
    being amplified by the directional component. This should support an
    isolated tornado threat with supercells. Supercells and organized
    multicell line segments will also be capable of severe wind gusts.
    The potential for severe gusts could extend further west into the
    foothills of the Appalachians across west-central North Carolina and
    far northern South Carolina.

    ...Central High Plains...
    A mid-level ridge will be in place today across the High Plains, as
    a subtle shortwave trough moves eastward through the ridge. This
    feature along with topographic ascent will support scattered
    convective development during the afternoon. Thunderstorms will form
    in the higher terrain and move eastward into the lower elevations.
    Ahead of the storms, RAP forecast soundings at 21Z have MLCAPE in
    the 2000 to 2500 J/kg range with 0-6 km shear around 30 knots. This,
    combined with steep low-level lapse rates and surface-temperature
    dewpoint spreads near 30 degrees F should support a potential for
    isolated severe wind gusts. Hail will also be possible with the
    stronger cells.

    Thunderstorms capable of severe wind gusts and a tornado threat are
    expected today from parts of the Mid-Atlantic southward into the
    Carolinas. A few severe wind gusts and hail may also occur this
    afternoon and evening across parts of the central High Plains.

    ...Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas and southern Appalachians...
    A loosely organized band of storms, with some semi-discrete
    storms/prior supercell on its southwestern flank around sunrise,
    will continue to progress east-southeastward across the Cumberland
    Plateau toward/across the Appalachians spine early today. Some
    severe risk may exist this morning with the aforementioned storms on
    the southwest flank including along the Kentucky/West
    Virginia/Virginia border vicinity, but storm-associated cloud cover
    and precipitation will otherwise be an important and somewhat
    uncertain factor for destabilization with northeastward extent
    regionally later today.

    The region will be influenced by some additional large-scale
    amplification of the upper trough along the East Coast, with a belt
    of notably strong (45-55 kt around 500 mb) northwesterly flow aloft,
    as sampled by upstream 12z observed RAOBs from the likes of
    Wilmington OH and Pittsburgh PA, that is expected to spread
    southeastward toward the region today. A moist air mass will persist
    ahead of the east-southeastward-moving cold front, with the
    strongest destabilization across the southern Appalachians vicinity
    and Carolinas. Recovery/destabilization is generally expected across
    Virginia in the wake of the early day convection, allowing for
    probable severe-storm development into mid/late afternoon. Severe
    storms may occur farther north across the Mid-Atlantic within a more
    narrow warm sector.

    Ample deep-layer shear and moderate low-level shear/SRH will support
    a combination of supercells and organized line segments, with a more
    discrete mode, and longer duration thereof, expected with the
    southwesternmost extent of storms regionally from southern Virginia
    into the Carolinas/southern Appalachians. Some tornado potential
    will exist aside from a more prevalent damaging wind risk this
    afternoon and evening as storms spread toward coastal areas.

    ...Central High Plains...
    A ridge-peripheral low-amplitude/subtle shortwave trough will
    influence scattered thunderstorm development later today.
    Thunderstorms are expected to form in the higher terrain and drift
    eastward into the lower elevations. Moderate buoyancy across the
    High Plains and upwards of 30-40 kt (stronger northward regionally)
    effective shear will support sustained storms. Steep low-level lapse
    rates and surface-temperature dewpoint spreads near 30 degrees F
    will support a potential for isolated severe wind gusts, aside from
    some hail this afternoon and evening.

    The forecast appears to be on track, and minimal changes were needed
    with this update. The MRGL and SLGT risk areas in the central High
    Plains were expanded slightly eastward in western NE and KS. The
    primary concern will be upscale-growing clusters capable of
    producing severe wind gusts as storms move into an increasingly
    warm/moist air mass this evening.

    Farther east, severe probabilities were trimmed behind
    southeastward-moving storms in the central Appalachians. The primary
    concern continues to be damaging wind gusts, especially with any
    organized clusters/bowing structures that evolve.

    ...East TN into central VA/NC...
    Late morning thunderstorms persist over parts of this region, with
    pockets of precip and clouds. This will somewhat limit afternoon
    heating across NC, but upstream heating and ample moisture should
    spread eastward. This will aid in the re-development of intense
    thunderstorms later today across the mountains of east TN/KY into
    southwest VA and western NC. Forecast soundings show considerable
    low and deep layer shear, favorable for supercell and bowing
    structures. Damaging winds are the main concern, but hail and a few
    tornadoes are also possible if supercells are maintained. These
    storms will spread southeastward into central NC during the evening
    with a continued damaging wind risk.

    ...Central VA into parts of PA/DE/NJ...
    Persistent cloud cover is limiting daytime heating so far from
    eastern PA eastward to the coast. However, visible satellite
    imagery shows some clearing developing from central PA into central
    VA, where temperatures are climbing rapidly into the 80s. This
    trend will likely spread eastward and aid in the development of
    scattered afternoon storms. Relatively steep mid-level lapse rates
    and sufficient winds aloft will promote damaging winds in the
    strongest cores. Occasional supercell structures could also result
    in a tornado or two and/or hail.

    ...Eastern CO...
    An upper ridge is centered over northern NM, with 20-30 knot
    westerly flow over northern CO/southern WY. Scattered thunderstorms
    are expected to form over the mountains and foothills today,
    spreading eastward into the plains by late afternoon. Ample
    moisture and moderate CAPE over the mountains, along with sufficient
    vertical shear, may support hail in the strongest cells. As the
    activity moves eastward into a hot air mass, locally damaging winds
    will become a risk. This activity may spread into western NE/KS
    this evening before weakening.

    Thunderstorms capable of severe wind gusts and possibly a tornado or
    two are expected this evening from parts of the Mid-Atlantic
    southward into the Carolinas and far northeastern Georgia. A few
    severe wind gusts may also occur early this evening in parts of the
    central High Plains.

    ...Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas/Northeastern Georgia...
    Water vapor imagery currently shows a mid-level trough extending
    southward from the lower Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic and
    Carolinas. At the surface, a 1001 mb low is located over Maryland
    with a cold front extending southwestward from the near the low into
    the southern Appalachians. Moist air is present ahead of the front
    with surface dewpoints in the 70s F. Scattered strong to severe
    storms are ongoing across this moist airmass from Delaware southward
    into eastern Virginia, central North Carolina and far northeastern
    Georgia.

    Along this corridor, the RAP shows an axis of moderate instability,
    where MLCAPE is currently estimated to be in the 1500 to 3000 J/kg
    range. Along and near the instability axis, WSR-88D VWPs from
    Moorehead City, North Carolina west-southwestward into far northeast
    Georgia have 0-6 km shear near 30 knots and 0-3 km storm-relative
    helicity around 200 m2/s2. This environment will continue to support
    a potential for supercells with an isolated tornado threat. This
    threat should persist for another hour or two. In addition, RAP
    forecast soundings near the instability axis have precipitable water
    values around 2 inches, suggesting that the more organized line
    segments could produce wet downbursts capable of severe gusts.

    ...Central High Plains...
    A mid-level ridge is currently located over the central Rockies,
    according to water vapor imagery. A subtle shortwave trough appears
    to be moving through the ridge across central Colorado. Ahead of
    this feature, large-scale ascent is supporting a broken line of
    strong to severe storms from southwest Nebraska into far eastern
    Colorado. The RAP currently has an axis of strong instability
    analyzed from far southern Nebraska westward into far northeast
    Colorado, along which MLCAPE is estimated in the 2000 to 4000 J/kg
    range. As the storms move eastward into the strong instability over
    the couple of hours, isolated severe wind gusts and hail will be
    possible.

    ...Northern High Plains...
    At mid-levels, a ridge will move eastward into the northern Plains
    today. In the wake of the ridge, heights will begin to fall over the
    northern High Plains. At the surface, a cold front will advance
    southeastward into northwestern North Dakota and eastern Montana
    this afternoon. Ahead of the front, surface dewpoints in the mid to
    upper 50s F will contribute to moderate instability as surface
    temperatures warm. Low-level convergence along the front will aid
    convective initiation, with scattered thunderstorms moving eastward
    across the western Dakotas during the late afternoon and early
    evening.

    RAP forecast soundings near the instability axis at 00Z have MLCAPE
    in the 1500 to 2000 J/kg range. 0-3 km lapse rates are forecast to
    be near 9 C/km with surface temperature-dewpoint spreads exceeding
    40 degrees F. This should support a threat for severe wind gusts
    with high-based storms that form ahead of the front. The potential
    for severe gusts should be greatest in the early evening, especially
    if a cold pool can organize across the northern High Plains. Hail
    may also develop within the stronger cores.

    ...Southeast...
    A mid-level trough will remain in place along the Eastern Seaboard
    today, as a cold front advances southward into southern Georgia and
    southern Alabama. To the south of the front, surface dewpoints in
    the 70s F will contribute to an axis of strong instability by
    afternoon, with MLCAPE likely peaking in the 3000 to 4500 J/kg
    range. This, combined with 0-3 km lapse rates near 8 C/km, will be
    favorable for damaging wind gusts. The greatest potential for severe
    gusts will occur near the strongest instability, which is forecast
    to be from southern Georgia into northern Florida.

    ...20Z Update...
    The MRGL Risk in the Northeast was trimmed behind an eastward-moving
    band of frontal convection. This activity will continue to pose a
    risk of damaging wind gusts and possibly a brief tornado this
    afternoon, before moving into an increasingly stable air mass
    sampled by the CAR 18Z sounding and/or moving off the southern New
    England Coast.

    Farther west, the latest surface analysis depicts a surface low at
    the intersection of a cold front and lee trough in far northeast CO.
    Current thinking is that high-based thunderstorms will develop in
    the vicinity of this feature and spread east/northeastward into a
    deeply mixed boundary layer in southwestern NE this evening -- where
    a robust warm layer is present at the base of the EML (per LBF 18Z
    sounding). There is some potential that this environment supports a
    localized corridor of enhanced severe wind gusts (some upwards of 75
    mph). However, the aforementioned capping and spatially limited
    corridor casts uncertainty on the overall risk -- precluding an
    upgrade at this time.

    Elsewhere, the forecast remains on track and no changes were made
    with this update.

    ...Northern/Central Plains into the Upper Midwest...
    Post-frontal thunderstorms occurring this morning across ND have
    remained mostly sub-severe over the past couple of hours. A stout
    low-level inversion noted on the observed 12Z INL sounding will
    likely inhibit surface-based thunderstorms from developing until
    late this afternoon or early evening across the eastern Dakotas into
    northern MN. Still, gradual airmass destabilization is anticipated
    across this region along/ahead of a cold front through the
    afternoon. Large-scale ascent attendant to an ejecting mid-level
    shortwave trough from MT into ND will eventually aid scattered
    convective development along/near the front, most likely by 22-01Z.
    Moderate instability coupled with strong deep-layer shear will
    support some threat for supercells and large hail initially, before
    upscale growth into clusters supports an increasing severe/damaging
    wind threat with eastward extent into northern MN this evening. A
    tornado or two may also occur as low-level shear gradually increases
    in a narrow corridor ahead of the front this evening.

    Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorm development is forecast
    with southward extent into the central High Plains. A hot and very
    well-mixed low-level airmass ahead of the front/surface trough
    across this area may support occasional severe gusts with convective
    outflow. But, weaker mid-level winds and related modest deep-layer
    shear should result in only loosely organized clusters/cells. This
    activity should weaken with the loss of daytime heating.

    ...Southwest...
    Around 15-25 kt of east-northeasterly mid-level winds will persist
    today across far southern AZ/NM, to the south of prominent upper
    ridging that will remain anchored over the Southwest. Recent visible
    satellite imagery shows mostly clear conditions across southeast AZ,
    with latest surface observations showing ample low-level moisture
    present (surface dewpoints generally in the low to mid 60s across
    lower elevations). Ample heating of this moist airmass will support
    moderate instability by mid afternoon. Current expectations are for thunderstorms to initially develop over the higher terrain of
    southeast AZ as convective temperatures are reached, and
    subsequently spread west-southwestward into the lower deserts
    through the evening. Some organization/clustering appears possible
    with this activity, and the Slight Risk for severe wind gusts up to
    60-75 mph has been maintained with no changes. Isolated hail may
    also occur with the strongest cores that develop initially.

    ...Northeast/Northern Mid-Atlantic...
    An upper trough with enhanced mid-level south-southwesterly flow
    will advance eastward across the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic
    today. A weak surface low should develop northward into southern
    Quebec, with a trailing cold front advancing eastward across the
    Northeast this afternoon/evening. Filtered daytime heating of a
    seasonably very moist airmass (reference 12Z observed soundings from OKX/ALB/GYX) will support modest MLCAPE up to 500 J/kg, even though
    mid-level lapse rates remain quite poor. Thunderstorms developing
    along and ahead of the cold front may pose an isolated threat for
    damaging winds given the enhanced flow present at low/mid levels. A
    brief tornado or two could also occur across parts of New England
    where effective SRH may be locally greater in tandem with a
    southerly low-level jet. Still, the overall poor thermodynamic
    environment should limit a greater severe wind threat from
    developing this afternoon.

    ...Western and Northern Minnesota...
    On water vapor imagery, west-southwesterly mid-level flow is present
    over much of the north-central U.S., with a subtle shortwave trough
    evident over northern Minnesota. At the surface, a cold front is
    located over northwestern Minnesota. Surface dewpoints ahead of the
    front range from 65 to 70 F, and the RAP has MLCAPE in the 1500 to
    2500 J/kg range. This is supporting scattered thunderstorm
    development across northwest Minnesota. In addition, a 60 to 70 knot
    mid-level jet is moving over the top of this moist and unstable
    airmass, and is creating moderate deep-layer shear. This will be
    favorable for organized storms capable of producing severe wind
    gusts and isolated large hail. The severe threat will be maximized
    with supercells that develop.

    ...Central High Plains...
    The latest surface analysis shows a cold front located from
    northeast Colorado northeastward into central Nebraska, along which
    low-level convergence is maximized. This is supporting scattered
    thunderstorm development. Just ahead of the front, an axis of
    moderate instability is analyzed by the RAP over central and
    southwest Nebraska, where MLCAPE is estimated to be from 1000 to
    2000 J/kg. In addition, low to mid-level lapse rates are steep
    according to the RAP, with 0-3 km lapse rates exceeding 8 C/km over
    parts of southwest Nebraska. This environment will contribute to
    strong downdrafts capable of producing isolated severe gusts.

    ...Southeast Arizona...
    A moderately unstable airmass is currently located across southeast
    Arizona, where the RAP has MLCAPE in the 1000 to 2000 J/kg range.
    Thunderstorms are ongoing along the northern edge of the stronger
    instability. These storms will move west-southwestward across the
    remainder of southeastern Arizona over the next few hours. Steep low
    to mid-level lapse rates will contribute to a potential for severe

    Initially widely scattered storm development over the higher terrain
    will gradually move west across southeast AZ during the late
    afternoon and evening. Steep 700-500 mb lapse rates (around 8 deg
    C/km) atop very steep low-level lapse rates ahead of this activity
    will support ample evaporative cooling potential with the stronger
    thunderstorm cores. The resultant microbursts and associated
    outflow will yield a risk for 60-80 mph gusts as storms congeal into
    a small cluster or two.

    ...Sangre de Cristos and adjacent plains...
    A local maximum in buoyancy is depicted by model guidance near the
    Raton Mesa by mid-late afternoon where widely scattered storms will
    likely develop. Some of the CAMs show this activity moving
    southeast into parts of the OK-TX Panhandles during the early
    evening with an isolated risk for severe gusts. Marginally severe
    hail is possible with the stronger cores.

    ...SUMMARY...
    Scattered strong thunderstorm development is likely this afternoon
    and evening across parts of the lower Great Lakes and upper Ohio
    Valley into the middle and southern Atlantic Piedmont. This may be
    accompanied by some risk for severe weather, mainly in the form of
    localized damaging wind gusts.

    ...Discussion...
    Models indicate that one notable short wave perturbation within the
    westerlies will progress east of the Canadian Rockies through much
    of the Canadian Prairies by early Monday. As this occurs, it
    appears that an associated surface cyclone will occlude over
    northern portions of the Prairies during the day today, with one
    trailing cold front advancing east of the northern U.S. Rockies
    before stalling/weakening across the adjacent high plains, as
    another more substantive cold front approaches the western through
    central Canadian/U.S. border.

    At the same time, a trailing mid-level short wave trough is forecast
    to dig inland of the Pacific Northwest, then turn eastward across
    the northern U.S. intermountain region into Rockies. As it does, it
    appears that it will contribute to at least some suppression of
    initially more prominent mid-level ridging centered over the
    Southwest.

    Downstream, larger-scale mid-level troughing is likely to be
    maintained east of the Mississippi Valley through the Atlantic
    Seaboard. However, the most prominent embedded short wave trough
    already appears to be in the process of becoming increasingly
    sheared across the lower Ohio Valley. This is forecast to continue
    while shifting eastward toward the Appalachians today through
    tonight, with perhaps one emerging perturbation consolidating with
    another digging impulse across the lower Great Lakes vicinity later
    today through tonight. This may be accompanied by a northeastward
    migrating surface low, trailed by a weak cold frontal slowly
    advancing into and across the Appalachians.

    ...Eastern U.S...
    To the east of the larger-scale mid-level trough axis, early day
    cloud cover, precipitation, and otherwise generally weak
    lower/mid-tropospheric lapse rates will probably tend to at least
    slow, if not inhibit, boundary-layer destabilization. However, convection-allowing guidance suggests that breaks in cloud cover
    will eventually allow for widely scattered to scattered intensifying thunderstorm development by late this afternoon, if not earlier.

    It appears that this may tend to focus within a pre-cold frontal
    corridor across the Allegheny Plateau/upper Ohio Valley into lower
    Great Lakes vicinity, where it could be enhanced by 20-40 kt south-southwesterly flow in the 850-500 mb layer, and within
    somewhat more modest flow off the higher terrain into lee surface
    troughing across the Piedmont. Given at least modest CAPE in excess
    of 1000 J/kg, and potential for heavy precipitation loading in the
    presence of seasonably high moisture content, localized strong
    downbursts may generate a few damaging surface gusts.

    Within the better shear across the Allegheny Plateau into lower
    Great Lakes vicinity, the evolution of transient supercell
    structures accompanied by some risk for a tornado does not appear
    entirely out of the question, given forecast surface dew points
    near/above 70F. However, this potential remains unclear, based on
    varied model guidance.

    ...North Dakota...
    Some model output suggests that there may be at least attempts at
    deep convective development late this afternoon near the weak
    pre-cold frontal surface troughing. However, the potential for
    sustained thunderstorm activity remains more unclear due to limited
    low-level moisture beneath very warm and dry mid-levels, associated
    with an elevated mixed-layer overspreading the region during the
    day. It appears that somewhat better potential for thunderstorm
    development may await increasing forcing for ascent with the
    approach of the upstream short wave trough by late tonight. Based
    on forecast soundings this probably will be elevated or high-based
    in nature, but perhaps accompanied by some risk for hail and/or
    gusty winds.

    upstream shortwave trough later tonight. In either case, some risk
    for hail and severe winds will exist pending development across the
    region.

    ...Southeast Arizona/far southwest New Mexico...
    Residual cloud cover and widely scattered convection should clear
    relatively early today, with renewed diurnal destabilization across
    southeast Arizona and nearby southwest New Mexico. At least widely
    scattered thunderstorms should develop over the mountains/higher
    terrain of the Arizona/New Mexico border vicinity, with
    southwestward storm persistence across southeast Arizona aided by
    moderately strong northeasterly winds. A few instances of
    severe-caliber wind gusts/blowing dust are possible this afternoon

    Scattered strong to locally severe thunderstorm development is

    ...Eastern States...
    Current satellite imagery shows a positively titled shortwave trough
    extending from Lower MI southwestward into the Mid-South, while
    recent surface analysis places a corridor of low pressure associated
    with this shortwave from the Middle OH Valley into the Lower Great
    Lakes. Several surface lows are embedded within this broader area of
    low pressure, including a primary low over north-central OH/western
    Lake Erie. A cold front extends southward from this low to the TN/NC
    border vicinity before arcing back more southwestward through
    central AL and southern MS.

    This system (i.e. both the shortwave trough and associated cold
    front) is forecast to gradually push eastward while weakening.
    Airmass preceding this system is very moist, evidenced by upper
    60s/low 70s dewpoints and PW values at or above 2 inches on the
    regional 12Z soundings. Widespread cloud cover is in place, but
    ample moisture has already resulted in airmass destabilization,
    although the overall buoyancy will remain muted by poor lapse rates.
    General expectation is for thunderstorm coverage to increase
    substantially over the next few hours, fostered by a combination of
    low-level confluence and modest large-scale ascent.

    Low to mid-level flow throughout the eastern periphery of the
    shortwave trough is generally expected to be modest, ranging from
    around 40 kt across the Allegheny Plateau/upper Ohio Valley/lower
    Great Lakes vicinity to 20 kt across GA and SC. Consequently, a few
    more organized storms are possible across portions of the Allegheny
    Plateau, upper Ohio Valley, and lower Great Lakes, while a largely
    disorganized multicellular mode is anticipated elsewhere.
    Water-loaded downbursts are the primary risk, although low-level
    shear/SRH in the presence of a moist boundary layer suggests a brief
    tornado is possible where greater storm organization is
    expected.

    ...North Dakota/northwest Minnesota...
    Expansive upper ridging exists from southern CA/western AZ through
    the Plains and into Manitoba and Ontario. A strong shortwave trough
    is forecast to progress through Canadian Prairie Provinces within
    the northern periphery of this ridging. A cold front associated with
    this wave is expected to push eastward across the Dakotas,
    interacting with a moistening airmass across the region. A
    conditional risk for severe thunderstorms exists this afternoon, but
    most of the guidance keeps the airmass capped and free of deep
    convection. Better potential for thunderstorm development is
    expected overnight and into tomorrow morning as large-scale ascent
    attendant to the approaching shortwave combines with warm-air
    advection to foster elevated thunderstorm development. Isolated
    instances of hail and a strong gust or two are possible with these
    storms.

    Widely scattered thunderstorms should develop over the
    mountains/higher terrain of the central/southern Arizona/New Mexico

    Scattered strong to locally severe thunderstorm development is
    expected this afternoon and evening across parts of the lower Great
    Lakes and upper Ohio Valley into the middle and southern Atlantic
    Piedmont. Damaging winds are the primary hazard, although a tornado
    could occur.

    ...20Z Update...
    Only minor changes were made with this update. The MRGL Risk was
    expanded slightly eastward in portions of eastern SC, where an
    ongoing cluster of thunderstorms will continue to pose a risk of
    damaging wind gusts, given a very warm/moist downstream air mass.
    Farther north, the MRGL Risk was expanded into parts of northern NJ
    and northeast PA. Clouds breaks have supported modest
    destabilization of a moist air mass, and high-resolution guidance
    depicts thunderstorms moving into the area tonight -- focused along
    a northward-moving warm front. Despite modest instability, enhanced
    low-level flow/shear overspreading the region in tandem with the
    warm front could support a couple loosely organized cells/clusters
    with an accompanying risk of damaging wind gusts and perhaps a brief
    tornado. Elsewhere, the forecast remains on track and no changes
    were needed.

    ...Eastern States...
    Current satellite imagery shows a positively titled shortwave trough
    extending from Lower MI southwestward into the Mid-South, while
    recent surface analysis places a corridor of low pressure associated
    with this shortwave from the Middle OH Valley into the Lower Great
    Lakes. Several surface lows are embedded within this broader area of
    low pressure, including a primary low over north-central OH/western
    Lake Erie. A cold front extends southward from this low to the TN/NC
    border vicinity before arcing back more southwestward through
    central AL and southern MS.

    This system (i.e. both the shortwave trough and associated cold
    front) is forecast to gradually push eastward while weakening.
    Airmass preceding this system is very moist, evidenced by upper
    60s/low 70s dewpoints and PW values at or above 2 inches on the
    regional 12Z soundings. Widespread cloud cover is in place, but
    ample moisture has already resulted in airmass destabilization,
    although the overall buoyancy will remain muted by poor lapse rates.
    General expectation is for thunderstorm coverage to increase
    substantially over the next few hours, fostered by a combination of
    low-level confluence and modest large-scale ascent.

    Low to mid-level flow throughout the eastern periphery of the
    shortwave trough is generally expected to be modest, ranging from
    around 40 kt across the Allegheny Plateau/upper Ohio Valley/lower
    Great Lakes vicinity to 20 kt across GA and SC. Consequently, a few
    more organized storms are possible across portions of the Allegheny
    Plateau, upper Ohio Valley, and lower Great Lakes, while a largely
    disorganized multicellular mode is anticipated elsewhere.
    Water-loaded downbursts are the primary risk, although low-level
    shear/SRH in the presence of a moist boundary layer suggests a brief
    tornado is possible where greater storm organization is
    expected.

    ...North Dakota/northwest Minnesota...
    Expansive upper ridging exists from southern CA/western AZ through
    the Plains and into Manitoba and Ontario. A strong shortwave trough
    is forecast to progress through Canadian Prairie Provinces within
    the northern periphery of this ridging. A cold front associated with
    this wave is expected to push eastward across the Dakotas,
    interacting with a moistening airmass across the region. A
    conditional risk for severe thunderstorms exists this afternoon, but
    most of the guidance keeps the airmass capped and free of deep
    convection. Better potential for thunderstorm development is
    expected overnight and into tomorrow morning as large-scale ascent
    attendant to the approaching shortwave combines with warm-air
    advection to foster elevated thunderstorm development. Isolated
    instances of hail and a strong gust or two are possible with these
    storms.

    ...Southeast Arizona/far southwest New Mexico...
    Widely scattered thunderstorms should develop over the
    mountains/higher terrain of the central/southern Arizona/New Mexico
    border vicinity this afternoon. Moderate easterly/northeasterly
    mid-level flow should favor southwestward motion into the lower
    terrain of southeast Arizona. Modest buoyancy should allow for storm persistence across southeast AZ, including the potential for
    isolated strong to severe gusts.

    Instability along the higher terrain of east central Arizona into
    adjacent west central/southwest New Mexico has been sufficient to
    support weak to modest thunderstorm development. Despite weak, but
    favorably oriented, northeasterly steering flow, storms have been
    unable to propagate away from the higher terrain due to minimal
    destabilization in lower elevations. This is largely due to rather
    modest boundary layer moisture, including surface dew points
    lowering to around 50 F with continuing daytime heating and mixing.

    ...Northern Mid Atlantic...
    Downstream of a consolidating mid-level impulse across the lower
    Great Lakes region, destabilization remains sufficient to maintain
    scattered thunderstorm development across parts of the Allegheny
    Plateau/upper Ohio Valley into lower Great Lakes region. Aided by
    high boundary-layer moisture content and momentum associated with
    30+ kt southwesterly deep-layer mean flow, it appears that the risk
    for localized damaging wind gusts could linger into the 03-05Z time
    frame before diminishing.

    As the mid-level perturbation and associated surface troughing
    slowly shift eastward/northeastward, convection allowing output,
    including HREF/REFS calibrated thunderstorm guidance, suggest that
    intensifying thunderstorm development is possible late tonight in
    the warm sector across parts of eastern Pennsylvania toward the
    lower Hudson Valley. Based on forecast soundings, given the high boundary-layer moisture content, it does not appear out of the
    question that wind profiles could become marginally sufficient for
    isolated transient supercell structures with a risk for damaging
    wind gusts and/or perhaps a tornado.

    ...Eastern North Dakota into northwestern Minnesota...
    Strengthening forcing for ascent, aided by lower/mid-tropospheric
    warm advection, probably will support increasing potential for
    thunderstorm development by late tonight. Based on forecast
    soundings this will be generally elevated/high-based in nature, but
    potential instability and cloud-bearing shear might be sufficient to
    support some risk for small to marginally severe hail.

    Strong to severe thunderstorm development appears possible today
    across parts of northern Minnesota into adjacent portions of the
    eastern Dakotas, as well as across the eastern Arizona international
    border vicinity and parts of the northern Mid Atlantic through
    western New England.

    ...Discussion...
    A compact, but fairly deep, lower/mid-tropospheric cyclone over the
    Canadian Prairies is forecast to migrate across northern Manitoba
    into western Hudson Bay today through tonight. One initial trailing
    cold front is already advancing into the northern Great Plains, with
    a more substantive cold front approaching the international border
    and forecast to overtake it by mid afternoon, roughly across the
    northwestern Minnesota through southeastern North Dakota, central
    South Dakota, and western Nebraska vicinity.

    As a notable upstream mid-level short wave trough accelerates across
    the northern U.S. Rockies, toward northwestern Ontario, it appears
    that a secondary surface low emerging from Wyoming will weaken while
    migrating northeast of the Black Hills through the adjacent middle
    Missouri Valley early today. Another surface low may form along the
    front across northern Minnesota into northwestern Ontario this
    evening, but it appears that the most rapid deepening will occur
    north of Lake Superior overnight.

    To the south and southwest of the mid-level wave, models indicate
    that mid-level ridging will build across the Southwest during the
    day, with highest heights becoming centered along an axis across
    southwestern through central Arizona into north central New Mexico
    by late afternoon.

    Within the downstream westerlies, a notable mid-level trough is
    forecast to pivot east and northeast of the lower Great Lakes
    through New England. As it does, a remnant perturbation digging
    toward the southern Appalachians may evolve into a weak mid-level
    low across the Southeast, cut off from the westerlies.

    ...Northern Great Plains into Upper Midwest...
    The influence of possible early period convection and associated
    cloud cover on destabilization and convective potential later today
    across parts of the central and eastern Dakotas into Minnesota
    remains a bit unclear. However, by mid to late afternoon, guidance
    generally indicates that a fairly sharp quasi-stationary
    near-surface baroclinic zone will evolve across northwestern
    Minnesota through southeastern North Dakota. It appears that this
    may become a focus for at least a narrow corridor of modest
    boundary-layer destabilization, coincident with strengthening south
    to southwesterly lower/mid-tropospheric wind fields (including
    30-40+ kt around 850 mb and 50-70 kt around 500 mb). This may
    provide a window of opportunity for strong to severe storm
    development, including a couple of supercells, by this evening,
    before the front overtakes the instability axis with the passage of
    the frontal wave.

    ...Southeastern Arizona/adjacent New Mexico...
    Low-level moisture appears likely to remain relatively modest across
    central and southern Arizona, with strong daytime heating and mixing
    lowering surface dew points through the mid to lower 50s F by late
    afternoon. However, along the southern periphery of the stronger
    mid-level ridging, it appears that this may support at least
    moderate boundary layer CAPE near the international border vicinity,
    beneath 25+ kt east-northeasterly mid-level steering flow.

    The higher terrain either side of the southern Arizona/New Mexico
    state border will provide potential for a more substantive
    clustering of convection, which may propagate across and south of
    the international border by early this evening. If preceding
    thunderstorm development, initially developing in the unstable
    environment near the international border, does not generate too
    much stabilizing outflow, it is possible that this could become
    supportive of a swath of strong to severe wind gusts, aided by
    evaporative cooling in a deeply mixed sub-cloud layer with 40-50 F temperature/dew point spreads.

    ...Northern Mid Atlantic through western New England...
    Along and ahead of a weak cold front, trailing a deepening surface
    low migrating northeastward toward the lower St. Lawrence Valley, boundary-layer destabilization will probably be slowed, if not
    inhibited, by weak mid-level lapse rates and early day cloud cover/precipitation, However, strengthening deep-layer wind fields
    and shear will potentially become more supportive of organized
    thunderstorm development with a risk for damaging wind gusts and
    perhaps a tornado or two, if pre-frontal breaks in cloud cover can
    allow for sufficient destabilization with daytime heating.

    Radar mosaic shows a loose cluster of mainly occasionally strong
    thunderstorm activity over the Red River Valley. This activity has
    developed partly in response to isentropic lift downstream of an eastward-migrating mid-level speed max over the northern Rockies and
    adjacent plains. The morning showers/thunderstorms will likely
    reinforce a frontal zone draped southwest to northeast over the
    region.

    Heating in wake of early day cloud cover will foster moderate
    destabilization by mid afternoon as mid to upper-level flow
    gradually strengthens. The initial storms later today will likely
    pose a risk for severe gusts and large hail and perhaps a tornado if
    a couple of storms can acquire supercell characteristics and mature
    within a moist axis ahead of the front. Otherwise, small clusters
    will probably evolve with time and pose mainly a wind/hail threat.
    Farther south, lower storm coverage is expected along a surface
    trough into the central High Plains. Isolated, high-based storms
    will slowly move east within a hot airmass featuring very steep
    lapse rates. Isolated severe gusts may accompany the stronger cores
    and outflow before these storms wane by mid evening.

    ...Southeastern Arizona/adjacent New Mexico...
    Model guidance continues to indicate a belt of enhanced mid to upper northeasterlies over northern Sonora into far southeastern
    AZ/southwestern NM. Very strong heating resulting in moderate
    destabilization and orographic lift will favor scattered
    thunderstorm development by late afternoon into the early evening.
    Models (e.g., MPAS, HREF) show a cluster or two propagating on
    outflow into the lower deserts during the evening with very steep
    0-3 km lapse rates preceding this convection. Severe gusts 60 to 75
    mph will be the primary hazard.

    ...Northern Mid Atlantic through western New England...
    Along and ahead of a weak cold front, trailing a deepening surface
    low migrating northeastward toward the lower St. Lawrence Valley, boundary-layer destabilization will probably be slowed, if not

    Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible today into tonight
    across parts of the eastern Dakotas into northern Minnesota, as well
    as across portions of southern Arizona.

    ...Northern/Central Plains into the Upper Midwest...
    Post-frontal thunderstorms occurring this morning across ND have
    remained mostly sub-severe over the past couple of hours. A stout
    low-level inversion noted on the observed 12Z INL sounding will
    likely inhibit surface-based thunderstorms from developing until
    late this afternoon or early evening across the eastern Dakotas into
    northern MN. Still, gradual airmass destabilization is anticipated
    across this region along/ahead of a cold front through the
    afternoon. Large-scale ascent attendant to an ejecting mid-level
    shortwave trough from MT into ND will eventually aid scattered
    convective development along/near the front, most likely by 22-01Z.
    Moderate instability coupled with strong deep-layer shear will
    support some threat for supercells and large hail initially, before
    upscale growth into clusters supports an increasing severe/damaging
    wind threat with eastward extent into northern MN this evening. A
    tornado or two may also occur as low-level shear gradually increases
    in a narrow corridor ahead of the front this evening.

    Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorm development is forecast
    with southward extent into the central High Plains. A hot and very
    well-mixed low-level airmass ahead of the front/surface trough
    across this area may support occasional severe gusts with convective
    outflow. But, weaker mid-level winds and related modest deep-layer
    shear should result in only loosely organized clusters/cells. This
    activity should weaken with the loss of daytime heating.

    ...Southwest...
    Around 15-25 kt of east-northeasterly mid-level winds will persist
    today across far southern AZ/NM, to the south of prominent upper
    ridging that will remain anchored over the Southwest. Recent visible
    satellite imagery shows mostly clear conditions across southeast AZ,
    with latest surface observations showing ample low-level moisture
    present (surface dewpoints generally in the low to mid 60s across
    lower elevations). Ample heating of this moist airmass will support
    moderate instability by mid afternoon. Current expectations are for thunderstorms to initially develop over the higher terrain of
    southeast AZ as convective temperatures are reached, and
    subsequently spread west-southwestward into the lower deserts
    through the evening. Some organization/clustering appears possible
    with this activity, and the Slight Risk for severe wind gusts up to
    60-75 mph has been maintained with no changes. Isolated hail may
    also occur with the strongest cores that develop initially.

    ...Northeast/Northern Mid-Atlantic...
    An upper trough with enhanced mid-level south-southwesterly flow
    will advance eastward across the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic
    today. A weak surface low should develop northward into southern
    Quebec, with a trailing cold front advancing eastward across the
    Northeast this afternoon/evening. Filtered daytime heating of a
    seasonably very moist airmass (reference 12Z observed soundings from OKX/ALB/GYX) will support modest MLCAPE up to 500 J/kg, even though
    mid-level lapse rates remain quite poor. Thunderstorms developing
    along and ahead of the cold front may pose an isolated threat for
    damaging winds given the enhanced flow present at low/mid levels. A
    brief tornado or two could also occur across parts of New England
    where effective SRH may be locally greater in tandem with a
    southerly low-level jet. Still, the overall poor thermodynamic
    environment should limit a greater severe wind threat from
    developing this afternoon.

    Severe thunderstorms are forecast this afternoon and evening across
    the middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks. Isolated to widely
    scattered severe storms are also possible across the
    central/southern High Plains into the southern Plains this afternoon
    through early evening.

    ...20Z Update...
    The forecast remains on track, and only minor adjustments were made
    with this update. The SLGT Risk in the Middle MS Valley was expanded
    southward into northern Arkansas -- driven by 15-percent wind
    probabilities. Here, temperatures have warmed into the upper 80s to
    lower 90s amid middle/upper 70s dewpoints -- yielding
    moderate-strong surface-based buoyancy. High-resolution guidance is
    in good agreement, depicting a southeastward-moving line of storms
    moving into this environment tonight. Despite a gradual increase in
    nocturnal cooling and boundary-layer static stability, the rich
    moisture and strengthening 30-kt west-southwesterly LLJ should
    support a continued risk of scattered wind damage into the overnight
    hours.

    Farther north, the MRGL Risk was trimmed in portions of IL, where
    limited air mass recovery in the wake of ongoing convection will
    temper the severe risk this afternoon/evening.

    ...Middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks...
    Recent surface analysis places a low over the central MN/IA border
    vicinity. A cold front extends southwestward from this low into
    southwest KS before then arcing more westward across the OK
    Panhandle and northwestward through southeast CO. A pre-frontal
    trough also extends from this low to another weak low in the
    south-central KS/north-central OK border vicinity (about 25-30 miles
    north of Enid, OK), before continuing southwestward through the TX
    South Plains. Showers and thunderstorms are currently ongoing from
    southwest OK through southwest MO and southern IL within the warm
    conveyor preceding these surface boundaries. Extensive cloud cover
    associated with these showers and storms extends from OK into MO and
    IL as well, with additional cloud cover near the surface low over
    much of MN, IA, WI, and IL.

    Sheltered environment across the warm sector beneath this cloud
    cover is characterized by dewpoints in the low 70s. General
    expectation is for this airmass to destabilize as the ongoing
    showers and thunderstorm continue to shift eastward/northeastward
    and skies clear before the arrival of the pre-frontal trough and
    cold front. The primary low will continue to occlude, and the
    development of a secondary triple point farther south across
    northern MO appears likely. Afternoon thunderstorm development is
    anticipated along the cold front and pre-frontal trough as well as
    near the surface low and triple point. Effective deep-layer shear
    around 30 to 40 kt should be sufficient for organized storm
    structures. A more cellular mode is likely early in the convective
    cycle, before trends towards a more linear/bowing mode over time as
    cold pools amalgamate. Given the overall moist profiles,
    water-loaded downbursts appear to be the primary risk during the
    more initial cellular mode before cold-pool driven gusts become more
    likely during the linear phase. The threat for damaging winds should
    spread southeastward regionally through late afternoon and evening.

    A corridor of more southerly (perhaps even slightly southeasterly)
    wind is anticipated south of this triple point, combining with low
    to mid level southwesterlies to support moderate low-level shear and
    an associated threat for brief tornadoes.

    ...Front Range/Raton Mesa into the TX Panhandle/South Plains...
    Storms are expected to develop and increase in coverage across the
    high terrain through mid/late afternoon before then subsequently
    spreading southeastward into the very warm and deeply mixed boundary
    layer across the lower elevations. High-based, outflow-dominant
    storm structures could support the potential for strong to severe
    gusts. Additionally, interaction between these storms (and
    associated outflow) and the southward progressing front may occur
    from northeast NM into the TX Panhandle/South Plains. This
    interaction could result in a corridor of greater wind gust
    potential from east-central NM into the TX South Plains during the
    late afternoon.

    ...Western AR into southwest OK/northwest TX...
    Thunderstorms will likely redevelop on scattered basis on the front
    later this afternoon and evening. The very warm and moist afternoon
    boundary layer will support the potential for severe caliber wind
    gusts regionally. Deep-layer wind profiles will generally be weak,
    but stronger mid/high-level northwesterlies could support a degree
    of storm organization as storms cluster and spread
    south-southeastward.

    ...Ozarks/Mid Mississippi Valley...
    Latest water vapor imagery shows a positively-tilted mid-level
    trough over the upper Mississippi Valley with westerly divergent
    flow aloft over the Ozarks. At the surface, a 1003 mb low is located
    over eastern Iowa with a cold front extending south-southwestward
    across central and southwest Missouri. Ahead of the front, low-level convergence and moisture is maximized. Surface dewpoints within this
    zone are in the 70s F, and the RAP has MLCAPE in the 2000 to 3500
    J/kg range. Strong thunderstorms are ongoing just to the east of the instability axis over much of eastern Missouri. The storms will
    continue to move eastward toward the Mississippi River this evening
    and will eventually cross into southern Illinois.

    RAP forecast soundings across south-central Missouri early this
    evening have 0-6 km shear around 35 knots, with 0-3 km
    storm-relative helicity in the 200 to 225 m2/s2 range. This will
    support an isolated tornado threat with supercells. A tornado or two
    will be possible over the next couple of hours with cells that
    remain discrete. A gradual transition to linear mode is expected
    toward mid evening. The line that is currently to the west of St.
    Louis is expected to grow upscale, developing southward with time.
    The line will eventually reach southern Illinois and northeast
    Arkansas. A wind-damage threat will be possible along the more
    intense parts of this line segment.

    ...Southern High Plains...
    Mid-level flow is northwesterly over much of the southern Plains. At
    the surface, a cold front is located from eastern New Mexico into
    northwest Texas and southern Oklahoma. Scattered thunderstorms are
    ongoing along a narrow corridor of 60+ F surface dewpoints just to
    the south of the front. Within this corridor, the RAP shows moderate instability with MLCAPE in the 1500 to 2000 J/kg range. Forecast
    soundings early this evening along the instability axis have 0-6 km
    shear around 25 knots, with 0-3 km lapse rates in the 7.5 to 8 C/km
    range. Surface-temperature dewpoint spreads to the south of the
    front exceed 30 degrees F in some areas. The instability along with
    the steep lapse rates will support a threat for severe wind gusts
    for a couple more hours this evening.

    A positively-tilted mid-level trough will move southeastward across
    the mid Mississippi Valley today, as an associated cold front
    advances eastward into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. A
    north-to-south corridor of low-level moisture will be in place ahead
    of the front, where surface dewpoints will be in the 70s F. As
    surface temperatures warm this morning across the moist sector,
    moderate instability will develop. Low-level convergence ahead of
    the front and large-scale ascent associated with the trough will
    result in scattered to widespread convective development this
    afternoon. Thunderstorm intensification is expected to first take
    place in the Ohio Valley in the early afternoon, with additional
    more discrete cells developing southward into the Tennessee Valley.
    By mid to late afternoon, a broken line of thunderstorms is expected
    to organize and move eastward toward the southern Appalachians.

    Along the axis of instability, MLCAPE is forecast to peak in the
    1500 to 2500 J/kg range during the afternoon from eastern Tennessee
    northward into far southeast Indiana. Near this axis, a low-level
    speed max is forecast to develop with 850 mb winds speeds increasing
    to around 30 knots. 0-3 km storm-relative helicity is forecast to
    increase to around 200 ms/s2. This should be enough for an isolated
    tornado threat, mainly with supercells that remain discrete. The
    tornado potential should be minimized in areas where too many storms
    form. During the late afternoon, a transition to linear mode is
    expected. Severe wind gusts will be possible with any line that can
    become organized, with this potential persisting into the early
    evening.

    ...Southern High Plains/Southern Rockies...
    North-northwesterly mid-level flow will be in place today across
    much of the south-central U.S. At the surface, an axis of low-level
    moisture will be in place from west Texas northward into eastern New
    Mexico, where surface dewpoints will be from the mid 50s to the mid
    60s F. Along and near this axis, moderate instability is expected to
    develop by afternoon. Warming surface temperatures in the higher
    terrain will aid convective initiation, with storms forming and
    moving south-southeastward into the lower elevation of eastern New
    Mexico. The storms will eventually reach parts of west Texas during
    the evening. MLCAPE in the 1000 to 2000 J/kg range with 0-6 km shear
    around 30 knots, combined with 0-3 km lapse rates near 8 C/km, will
    likely be sufficient for isolated severe wind gusts.

    ...Southeast Arizona/Southwest New Mexico...
    An axis of low-level moisture and instability will be in place today
    across far southeastern Arizona. Along and near this axis, MLCAPE is
    forecast to peak in the 1000 to 1500 J/kg range. In addition, low to
    mid-level lapse rates will be very steep as temperatures heat up
    this afternoon. Storms that form within the stronger instability
    could have potential for isolated severe wind gusts.

    A positive-tilt mid-level trough will drift east-southeastward from
    the middle Mississippi Valley toward the lower Ohio Valley through
    tonight. A surface low will similarly develop eastward across
    Illinois/Indiana, with some uncertainty regarding the northward
    effective extent of a narrow warm sector owing to cyclone occlusion
    and residual early day convection and cloud cover.

    The moist air mass should moderately destabilize across the
    Tennessee Valley this afternoon ahead of the front, with more
    modest/uncertain destabilization progressively northward into and
    across Indiana/western Ohio. Scattered clusters of storms are
    expected to develop initially across Indiana/Kentucky this
    afternoon, and a bit later southward into Tennessee/Alabama.

    The strongest effective shear, upwards of 35 kt, is generally
    expected across Kentucky into Indiana/Ohio, although a
    low-to-mid-tropospheric flow weakness will tend to persist.
    Deep-layer winds will tend to be stronger overall across the
    Tennessee Valley, but a near-surface westerly flow component will
    reduce effective shear (20-25 kt). Damaging winds are the most
    probable risk regionally as storms intensify this afternoon.
    However, pending adequate destabilization, a tornado risk may exist
    for a time near the surface low/triple point vicinity across Indiana
    and northern/east-central Kentucky.

    ...Southern High Plains...
    Moderate diurnal destabilization is expected coincident with a
    reservoir of 50s/lower 60s F surface dewpoints regionally. This will
    be beneath relatively strong northerly winds aloft, which will aid
    storm organization/clustering to a degree as storms spread
    south-southeastward later today, reaching parts of west Texas this
    evening. MLCAPE between 1000-2000 J/kg and deep-layer shear around
    30 kt, combined with steep low-level lapse rates, will likely be
    sufficient for isolated severe wind gusts.

    ...Southwest/central New Mexico and southeast Arizona...
    Another round of thunderstorms are expected regionally beginning
    around mid-afternoon, and increasing through late afternoon and
    early evening. These storms will be influenced by a moist environment/orographic lift, as well as a upper ridge-peripheral
    belt of enhanced northerly winds, particularly across New Mexico.
    Some of the storms may produce isolated severe-caliber wind gusts

    Recent satellite imagery shows a positively tilted shortwave trough
    moving through the Mid MS Valley. Surface analysis shows an occluded
    surface low over central IL beneath the shortwave. Expectation is
    for this cyclone to drift slowly east-southeastward throughout the
    day, with the surface low gradually filling. As this low fills, the
    triple point low, currently near the IL/IN/KY border intersection,
    will become more prominent through the afternoon before it too
    occludes.

    Showers and thunderstorms are currently ongoing from eastern
    IN/western OH through eastern TN into AL, along the eastern
    periphery of an arcing warm conveyor. These showers and
    thunderstorms should continue northeastward/eastward as the entire
    system drifts east-southeastward, with some modest moisture
    advection anticipated throughout the warm sector. This should allow
    the warm sector to at least moderately destabilize, but persistent
    cloudiness will limit heating, likely tempering the overall
    buoyancy. Expectation is for more modest buoyancy (i.e. MLCAPE
    around 500 to 1000 J/kg) across IN and OH, with greater buoyancy
    (i.e. MLCAPE around 1500 J/kg) farther south across central KY and
    Middle TN. Thunderstorm development is anticipated along and ahead
    of the cold front as it moves through this destabilized and buoyant
    airmass.

    Moderate mid-level flow throughout the base of the Mid MS Valley
    shortwave trough will spread eastward across KY and TN, supporting
    effective shear around 30 to 35 kt across KY. Reduced vertical shear
    is expected farther north across the OH Valley (due to weaker
    mid-level flow) and farther south across TN Valley (due to more
    westerly low-level flow). Given these kinematic conditions, a
    predominantly multicellular mode is favored, although a few
    supercells appear possible from southeast IN/southwest OH through
    central KY. Damaging wind gusts will be the most prominent hazard,
    but a tornado or two is also possible, particularly within the
    corridor from far southeast IN through far north-central KY and far
    southwest OH. Here, some modestly increased low-level shear is
    possible near the triple point low as it moves through.

    Moderate mid-level moisture will support afternoon thunderstorm
    development across the higher terrain from western AZ through

    Thunderstorms posing a risk for generally brief, weak tornadoes
    across the southwestern Ohio vicinity probably will begin to
    diminish within the next hour or two. Otherwise, locally strong to
    severe gusts remain possible this evening in continuing thunderstorm development across parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, and
    parts of the southern Rockies into adjacent southern Great Plains.

    ...01Z Update...

    ...Ohio/Tennessee Valleys...
    Focused low-level convergence and weak to modest clockwise-curved
    low-level hodographs, near a surface low now centered to the
    northwest of the Greater Cincinnati area, have contributed to
    transient supercell structures within developing convection
    downstream of an elongating mid-level low across the lower
    Ohio/middle Mississippi Valley vicinity. Potential for brief/weak
    tornadoes has probably been boosted by near-surface buoyancy
    associated with a boundary layer characterized by high relative
    humidity and surface dew points in the lower 70s, along at least a
    narrow pre-frontal corridor near the southern Ohio/Indiana state
    border area into north central Kentucky. However, with the loss of
    daytime heating, near-surface stabilization probably will diminish
    this threat by 02-03Z.

    Otherwise, some intensification of pre-frontal thunderstorm
    development still appears possible this evening, southward across
    parts of middle and eastern Tennessee into northern Alabama.
    Although lower/mid-tropospheric lapse rates are rather modest to
    weak, seasonably high moisture content is supporting sizable CAPE.
    Aided by 20-30 kt deep-layer southwesterly mean flow overspreading
    this environment, heavy precipitation loading and downward momentum
    transfer could still contribute to potential for localized damaging
    surface gusts.

    ...Southern Rockies and adjacent southern Great Plains...
    Convection developing southward ahead of a weak perturbation within
    light northerly flow, into a very warm and deeply mixed boundary
    layer with 40-50 F surface temperature/dew point spreads, may

    ...SUMMARY...
    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and isolated large hail will be
    possible this afternoon and evening across parts of the central and
    northern Plains, but especially across parts of Nebraska and South
    Dakota. Isolated severe wind gusts may also occur across parts of
    the Southeast.

    ...Central and Northern Plains including Nebraska/South Dakota...
    An amplifying shortwave trough evident in water vapor imagery over
    Wyoming this morning will continue east and then a bit southeastward
    through tonight toward the middle Missouri Valley and Upper Midwest.
    A cold front will become more southeastward-progressive later today
    and tonight, intercepting a moisture-rich air mass across Kansas
    into Nebraska/South Dakota.

    Early day scattered precipitation/cloud cover will tend to abate
    and/or shift away from the region later today, allowing for ample
    insolation near a surface trough and ahead of the front.
    Mid-tropospheric winds will be weak, but a few initial supercells
    could occur in vicinity of south-central South Dakota into central
    Nebraska amidst somewhat stronger effective shear. Some severe hail
    will be possible early in the developmental cycle, but damaging
    winds should be an increasing and more common concern with the
    expectation that storms will cluster, grow upscale, and progress
    southeastward this evening, aided by an increasingly strong
    southwesterly low-level jet.

    Further west into parts of the High Plains, pockets of moderate
    instability may develop in parts of eastern Colorado, western Kansas
    and eastern Montana. Although large-scale ascent will be weak in
    these areas, topographic forcing will aid convective initiation.
    During the mid/late afternoon into evening, isolated to scattered
    storms will move east-southeastward into the lower elevations,
    including the possibility of storms spreading from southern
    Saskatchewan into northeast Montana, where a somewhat more
    severe-favorable environment will exist. Localized strong to severe
    wind gusts and hail will be possible regionally.

    A very moist air mass will persist regionally to the south of a
    generally west/east-oriented front. Scattered thunderstorms are

    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and isolated large hail will be
    possible this afternoon and evening across parts of the central and
    northern Plains, but especially across parts of South Dakota,
    Nebraska, and north-central Kansas. Isolated severe wind gusts may
    also occur across parts of the Southeast.

    ...Northern/Central Plains...
    Showers and thunderstorms are currently ongoing within a modest
    warm-air advection regime from central SD into northeast NE. These
    storms will likely weaken over the next few hours as the low to
    mid-level flow decreases. This should allow for sufficient airmass recovery/destabilization by the late afternoon across much of the
    region. Recent surface analysis depicted 70s dewpoints into far
    south-central NE, as well as pockets of greater low-level moisture
    in western SD and ahead of a cold front in northeast ND. Heating
    within this moist environment to the west of the ongoing storms (and
    associated cloudiness) is expected to result in a corridor of strong
    to very strong buoyancy by this afternoon.

    Current satellite imagery shows a shortwave trough moving across
    southeast MT and WY. Expectation is for this wave to continue
    eastward, interacting with the destabilized and buoyant airmass
    across the north/central Plains to support thunderstorm development.
    Initial development appears most likely across western/central SD
    where the ascent attendant to this shortwave trough will be
    augmented by mesoscale lift near a surface low currently over
    southwest SD. A more cellular mode is likely early in the convective
    cycle, with a trend towards a more clustered/linear mode thereafter.
    Primary threat will be strong gusts with some isolated hail
    possible, particularly early during the more cellular mode.

    In addition to the low over southwest SD, recent surface analysis
    placed another low over northwest KS. Weak troughing between these
    lows, likely sharpened by baroclinicity driven by differential
    heating, could act as a favorable corridor for forward propagation
    if a more coherent linear structure materializes.

    ...Eastern ND into northern MN...
    Thunderstorm development is expected this afternoon from eastern ND
    into northern MN along a southeastward-progressing cold front
    forecast to move through the region. Moderate buoyancy will precede
    this front, but vertical shear will be modest, limiting storm
    organization and duration. Even so, buoyancy will be strong enough
    for occasional damaging gusts and isolated instances of hail.

    ...Northern/Central High Plains...
    Pockets of moderate instability may develop in parts of eastern
    Colorado, western Kansas and eastern Montana. Although large-scale
    ascent will be weak in these areas, topographic forcing will aid
    convective initiation. During the mid/late afternoon into evening,
    isolated to scattered storms will move east-southeastward into the
    lower elevations, with localized strong to severe wind gusts and
    hail possible. Slightly stronger vertical shear is possible across north-central/northeast MT, where a few more organized storms are
    possible.

    ...Central Gulf Coast into northern FL/southern GA...
    A modest baroclinic boundary extends from central AL southeastward
    through southern/southeast GA. Dewpoints to the south of this
    boundary are in the 70s, with temperatures already in the upper
    80s/low 90s. Moderate to strong buoyancy will continue to build
    across this region south of the boundary, with low-level convergence contributing to scattered to widespread thunderstorm development.
    Vertical shear will remain weak, and a largely disorganized
    multicellular storm mode is expected. Even so, water loading within
    some of the stronger storms that develop and mature could result in
    isolated damaging wind gusts through late afternoon/early evening.

    The forecast remains on track, and only minor changes were made with
    this update. The eastern edge of the SLGT Risk was trimmed in
    portions of eastern SD and northeastern NE. Here, persistent
    convection within a weak warm-advection regime preceding a remnant
    MCV will limit air mass recovery and temper the overall severe risk
    this afternoon. Farther west, a minor expansion of the SLGT Risk was
    made over southwestern SD and western NE, where ample boundary-layer heating/destabilization of a moist air mass is underway along/ahead
    of a well-defined surface trough/wind shift. Any thunderstorms that
    develop and track southeastward through this corridor will pose a
    risk of large hail initially, with an increasing risk of severe wind
    gusts as storms grow upscale.

    Finally, the SLGT Risk was expanded slightly southeastward in far
    southeastern NE and northeastern KS. The latest high-resolution
    guidance is in good agreement, depicting one or more organized line
    segments tracking southeastward tonight. Despite increasing
    nocturnal PBL cooling/stabilization ahead of this activity, a
    strengthening 30-40-kt southerly LLJ should help maintain a risk of
    damaging wind gusts into overnight hours.

    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and hail will be possible this
    evening from parts of central South Dakota southward into
    east-central Nebraska and northern Kansas. Isolated severe gusts may
    also occur in parts of the central High Plains, northern Plains and
    upper Mississippi Valley.

    ...Central and Northern Plains...
    A mid-level shortwave trough is evident on water vapor imagery from
    eastern South Dakota extending southwestward into Nebraska. Another
    more subtle shortwave trough appears to be moving through the
    northern High Plains. Strong to severe thunderstorms are ongoing
    ahead of each of these features, along and near an instability axis
    analyzed by the RAP from west-central South Dakota southeastward
    into central Nebraska. The greatest potential for severe storms this
    evening will be associated with a line segment that is located
    across central and northeastern Nebraska, which is near and to the
    northeast of the strongest instability.

    Along the instability corridor, the RAP has MLCAPE in the 2000 to
    4000 J/kg range. The North Platte 00Z sounding is just to the west
    of the instability max and has 0-6 km shear around 30 knots, with
    0-3 km lapse rates of 8 to 8.5 C/km. This environment will support a
    threat for severe wind gusts as the line moves southward across the
    remainder of central and eastern Nebraska over the next few hours.
    The wind-damage threat could persist into the late evening and early
    overnight, as the convective line moves from Nebraska into northern
    Kansas.

    Additional strong thunderstorms will be possible across parts of the
    central High Plains and from the northern Plains into the upper
    Mississippi Valley. However, instability is a bit weaker in these
    two areas suggesting that any severe threat should be marginal.

    Thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and hail will be possible this
    afternoon and evening across parts of the Ozarks and mid Mississippi
    Valley. Isolated severe gusts will also be possible in parts of the
    southern Plains and from east-central Colorado into northeastern New
    Mexico.

    ...Ozarks/Mid Mississippi Valley...
    At mid-levels, a positively tilted shortwave trough will move
    southeastward across the mid to upper Mississippi Valley. An
    associated cold front will advance southeastward into the western
    Ozarks. Ahead of the front, an axis of moisture will be in place
    with surface dewpoints in the 70s F. As surface temperatures warm,
    moderate instability will develop along and near the moist axis,
    with MLCAPE forecast to peak in the 2500 to 3500 J/kg range during
    the afternoon. In addition to the instability, mid-level flow will
    be westerly at 30 to 35 knots, which will contribute to moderate
    deep-layer shear over much of the moist sector. This will result a
    mixed mode with supercells and organized line segments both
    possible. Along the instability axis, 0-3 km lapse rates are
    forecast to peak near 7 C/km which will support a threat for severe
    wind gusts. The threat could persist into the early to mid evening
    as storms move southeastward across the mid Mississippi Valley.

    ...Southern Plains/East-central Colorado/Northeast New Mexico...
    Northwesterly mid-level flow will be in place across much of the
    central U.S. today. At the surface, a cold front will move southward
    into central Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle by afternoon. An axis
    of moderate instability will develop ahead of the front as
    temperatures become hot in the mid to late afternoon. Increasing
    low-level convergence near the front will result in scattered
    thunderstorm development. These storms will move south-southeastward
    across the Red River Valley and southward across the Caprock of west
    Texas. Very steep low to mid-level lapse rates and large temperature
    dewpoint spreads exceeding 40 degrees F in some areas will result in
    a potential for isolated severe wind gusts.

    Further west into east-central Colorado and northeast New Mexico, an
    axis of instability will develop by afternoon in and near the
    foothills of the southern Rockies. Storms will form in the mid to
    late afternoon in the higher terrain and gradually move
    southeastward into the lower elevations. Steep low to mid-level
    lapse rates will support a potential for isolated severe gusts. Hail
    could also occur with the stronger updrafts.

    Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across
    the middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks. Isolated severe storms may
    also occur across the southern Plains and central/southern High
    Plains this afternoon through early evening.

    ...Middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks...
    Fairly extensive elevated convection exists this morning across
    Missouri into western Illinois and eastern Iowa. A positive-tilt
    trough over the Corn Belt will continue southeastward today toward
    the middle Mississippi Valley, with an enhanced belt of
    northwesterly flow aloft overlapping the near-frontal environment as
    a cold front spreads southeastward across the lower Missouri Valley
    toward the Ozarks.

    Related to the early day convection, some uncertainty exists
    regarding the north-northeastward extent of the unstable warm sector
    later today from northeast Missouri into eastern Iowa/northwest
    Illinois. Regardless, a moist air mass will reside ahead of the
    front, with moderate to locally strong destabilization expected,
    especially across a broad part of central/southwest Missouri into
    peak heating, as early day clouds abate.

    Aided by the stronger northwesterly flow aloft, effective shear of
    30-35 kt will generally exist across the Missouri Ozarks, with
    somewhat stronger deep-layer winds/vertical shear (40+ kt) northward
    across eastern/northern Missouri into Iowa/Illinois. Some supercells
    will be possible. Some hail could occur, and low-level shear/SRH
    could support tornado potential as well, mainly across eastern
    Missouri and possibly nearby western Illinois/southeast Iowa.
    However, damaging winds should emerge as the most prevalent severe
    risk as storms spread southeastward regionally through late
    afternoon and evening.

    ...Southern Plains including Oklahoma/northern Texas...
    While some thunderstorms and related cloud cover exist this morning,
    cloud breaks will lead to intense heating later this afternoon ahead
    of a south/southeastward-advancing front. Thunderstorms will likely
    redevelop on scattered basis later this afternoon and persist into
    the evening. The hot/moist afternoon boundary layer will support the
    potential for severe caliber wind gusts regionally. Deep-layer wind
    profiles will generally be weak, but somewhat stronger
    mid/high-level northwesterly winds could support a degree of storm
    organization as storms cluster and spread south-southeastward.

    ...Front Range/Raton Mesa and central/southern High Plains...
    Storms are expected to develop and increase in coverage and
    intensity through mid/late afternoon initially near the high
    terrain, subsequently spreading southeastward toward lower
    elevations. Steep low to mid-level lapse rates will support a
    potential for isolated severe gusts. Hail could also occur with the

    Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across
    the middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks. Isolated severe storms may
    also occur across the southern Plains and central/southern High
    Plains this afternoon through early evening.

    ...Middle Mississippi Valley and Ozarks...
    Recent surface analysis places a low over the central MN/IA border
    vicinity. A cold front extends southwestward from this low into
    southwest KS before then arcing more westward across the OK
    Panhandle and northwestward through southeast CO. A pre-frontal
    trough also extends from this low to another weak low in the
    south-central KS/north-central OK border vicinity (about 25-30 miles
    north of Enid, OK), before continuing southwestward through the TX
    South Plains. Showers and thunderstorms are currently ongoing from
    southwest OK through southwest MO and southern IL within the warm
    conveyor preceding these surface boundaries. Extensive cloud cover
    associated with these showers and storms extends from OK into MO and
    IL as well, with additional cloud cover near the surface low over
    much of MN, IA, WI, and IL.

    Sheltered environment across the warm sector beneath this cloud
    cover is characterized by dewpoints in the low 70s. General
    expectation is for this airmass to destabilize as the ongoing
    showers and thunderstorm continue to shift eastward/northeastward
    and skies clear before the arrival of the pre-frontal trough and
    cold front. The primary low will continue to occlude, and the
    development of a secondary triple point farther south across
    northern MO appears likely. Afternoon thunderstorm development is
    anticipated along the cold front and pre-frontal trough as well as
    near the surface low and triple point. Effective deep-layer shear
    around 30 to 40 kt should be sufficient for organized storm
    structures. A more cellular mode is likely early in the convective
    cycle, before trends towards a more linear/bowing mode over time as
    cold pools amalgamate. Given the overall moist profiles,
    water-loaded downbursts appear to be the primary risk during the
    more initial cellular mode before cold-pool driven gusts become more
    likely during the linear phase. The threat for damaging winds should
    spread southeastward regionally through late afternoon and evening.

    A corridor of more southerly (perhaps even slightly southeasterly)
    wind is anticipated south of this triple point, combining with low
    to mid level southwesterlies to support moderate low-level shear and
    an associated threat for brief tornadoes.

    ...Front Range/Raton Mesa into the TX Panhandle/South Plains...
    Storms are expected to develop and increase in coverage across the
    high terrain through mid/late afternoon before then subsequently
    spreading southeastward into the very warm and deeply mixed boundary
    layer across the lower elevations. High-based, outflow-dominant
    storm structures could support the potential for strong to severe
    gusts. Additionally, interaction between these storms (and
    associated outflow) and the southward progressing front may occur
    from northeast NM into the TX Panhandle/South Plains. This
    interaction could result in a corridor of greater wind gust
    potential from east-central NM into the TX South Plains during the
    late afternoon.

    ...Western AR into southwest OK/northwest TX...
    Thunderstorms will likely redevelop on scattered basis on the front
    later this afternoon and evening. The very warm and moist afternoon
    boundary layer will support the potential for severe caliber wind
    gusts regionally. Deep-layer wind profiles will generally be weak,
    but stronger mid/high-level northwesterlies could support a degree
    of storm organization as storms cluster and spread
    south-southeastward.

    as well as the Great Basin/northern Intermountain West.

    ...Southeast States...
    Near the base of the extensive eastern CONUS trough, a cold front
    will slowly spread southward/stall regionally, with a moist and
    unstable air mass to its south. Surface dewpoints in the 70s F will
    contribute to an axis of strong instability by afternoon, with
    MLCAPE likely reaching 3000+ J/kg with steep low-level lapse rates.
    Damaging winds will be possible with the stronger storms, which
    could include the development of some semi-organized clusters into
    late afternoon/early evening.

    ...Northern Plains/Upper Midwest...
    An approaching disturbance and weak height falls will develop into
    the region later today, interfacing with an east-southeastward
    moving front and somewhat sharpening the regional lee trough ahead
    of it. Surface dewpoints in the mid to upper 50s F will contribute
    to moderate instability as surface temperatures diurnally warm.
    Low-level convergence along the front/lee trough will aid convective initiation, with scattered thunderstorms moving eastward
    across the western Dakotas during the late afternoon and early
    evening. Large hail can be expected, and the high-based storms will
    be capable of severe-caliber wind gusts, especially if storms
    aggregate and cluster into the evening.

    Farther east, a more conditional-type threat will exist diurnally
    into northern Minnesota within a very unstable environment, but it
    is a bit more probable that widely scattered storms develop into the
    region tonight. If so, a few severe storms capable of wind/hail
    could occur.

    ...Great Basin/northern Intermountain West...
    A northeastward-transitioning shortwave trough and speed max, along
    with diurnal heating, will influence thunderstorm development across
    the region, including portions of southern/eastern Idaho and nearby
    portions of northeast Nevada, northern Utah and southwest Montana.
    Modestly enhanced mid-level winds and sufficient buoyancy/steep
    lapse rates will support the potential for a few severe storms

    The latest surface analysis shows a sufficiently moist airmass over
    southern Arizona, where surface dewpoints are in the upper 50s to
    around 60 F. This is contributing to moderate instability over parts
    of southern Arizona, with the RAP suggesting that MLCAPE is in the
    1000 to 2000 J/kg range. Thunderstorms have developed in the higher
    terrain of southwest New Mexico. These storms will move
    west-southwestward across southern Arizona this evening. In addition
    to the instability, surface temperature-dewpoint spreads across this
    airmass are large which is resulting in very steep low-level lapse
    rates. This will contribute to a potential for severe wind gusts
    this evening.

    ...Southern Rockies/Southern High Plains...
    Scattered thunderstorms are ongoing in the southern Rockies early
    this evening. These storms will move east-southeastward across
    southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico this evening,
    where the RAP has SBCAPE around 1000 J/kg with moderate deep-layer
    shear and steep low to mid-level lapse rates. The environment will
    support an isolated potential for severe wind gusts and hail over
    the next few hours.

    ...Upper Midwest...
    An upper-level trough will move through the north-central U.S. this
    evening. Ahead of the trough, a moist and unstable airmass will be
    in place over the mid Missouri and mid to upper Mississippi Valleys.
    An axis of low-level moisture is analyzed from northeast Kansas into
    southeast Iowa, where surface dewpoints are in the 70s F. This is
    contributing to moderate instability with the RAP showing MLCAPE in
    the 2000 to 3500 J/kg range. Short-term model forecasts suggest that
    scattered thunderstorms will develop near the instability axis
    during the overnight period. The instability along with about 30

    ...Mid Mississippi Valley...
    An upper-level trough will move eastward today across the
    north-central U.S. At the surface, a quasi-stationary front will be
    located from the central Plains northeastward into the mid
    Mississippi Valley. Along and to the south of the front, surface
    dewpoints will be in the lower to mid 70s F. As surface temperatures
    warm today, moderate instability will develop to the south of the
    front. Large-scale ascent associated with the trough will support
    scattered to numerous thunderstorm development from this afternoon
    into tonight across much of Missouri and Illinois.

    RAP forecast soundings late this afternoon near the instability axis
    in northeast Missouri have MLCAPE near 2000 j/kg, with 0-6 km shear
    around 35 knots. This may support supercell development with storms
    that remain discrete. However, high-resolution models suggest that
    storm mode could be more favorable for multicells due to widespread
    convective coverage. Although low-level lapse rates will be poor,
    the instability and moderate deep-layer shear could be enough for
    isolated severe wind gusts and hail.

    ...Southern High Plains...
    West-northwesterly mid-level flow will be in place today across much
    of the central U.S. A small pocket of moderate instability is
    forecast to develop over southeast Colorado this afternoon. This
    will aid convective initiation in the foothills of the southern
    Rockies. During the late afternoon and early evening, storms are
    expected to move east-southeastward into the lower elevations of the northwestern Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma Panhandle. The
    instability and steep low to mid-level lapse rates may support an

    Water-vapor imagery this morning shows a broad upper trough over the north-central U.S. with a couple of embedded disturbances. A
    leading weak impulse appears associated with a small cluster of
    strong to locally severe activity early this morning across the
    IA-MO border vicinity, near and immediately north of a stationary
    front. These showers/thunderstorms will likely continue east of the
    MS River but it remains unclear whether these storms maintain a
    localized risk for severe before gradually weakening. Later today,
    ascent associated with an upstream disturbance moving through the
    base of the larger-scale trough over NE into IA, will favor
    additional storm development as the boundary layer heats south of
    the frontal zone. Moderate buoyancy is forecast by guidance and
    sufficient deep-layer shear will support some potential storm
    organization. The stronger storms may yield an episodic severe risk
    before gradually diminishing during the evening.

    ...Southeastern Arizona...
    A seasonably moist airmass sampled this morning by surface
    observations (lower 60s F dewpoints) will undergo strong heating
    through late afternoon. Orographic lifting will favor convection
    developing over the higher terrain and gradually
    spreading/developing into the lower deserts during the early
    evening. Very steep low to mid-level lapse rates will contribute
    towards a risk for strong downdrafts capable of a microburst threat
    (60-80 mph). Considered a Slight-Risk based on potentially
    scattered storm coverage moving into the lower deserts, but
    sufficient model run-to-run (time-lagged HRRR) variability and model
    ensemble spread (i.e., 00z HREF vs. REFS) preclude a wind-driven

    Severe potential this afternoon through tonight will be complicated
    by ongoing convection/precipitation from eastern KS into the mid MS

    of a surface front across these regions through the afternoon, with
    this area on the southern periphery of mid/upper-level troughing
    over central Canada and the northern Plains/Upper Midwest. An
    embedded mid-level disturbance is aiding the ongoing sub-severe
    convection. Current expectations are for at least isolated strong to
    severe thunderstorms to develop later this afternoon and evening in
    the gradually destabilizing airmass, with sufficient deep-layer
    shear forecast to support some updraft organization. Occasional hail
    and damaging winds may occur with the stronger cores, but evolution
    into one or more bowing clusters remains uncertain. A stronger
    signal exists for scattered to numerous thunderstorms to develop
    late this evening into early Thursday morning across eastern KS into
    MO in a strengthening low-level warm advection regime, with a
    continued severe hail/wind threat possible given ample MUCAPE and
    strong shear forecast in the cloud-bearing layer.

    ...Arizona...
    A seasonably moist low-level airmass (with surface observations
    generally in the low to mid 60s) will undergo further heating
    through late afternoon. Orographic lift should favor convection
    developing over the higher terrain and gradually spreading into the
    lower deserts this evening, as modest mid-level easterly flow
    persists to the south of upper ridging centered over the Southwest.
    Very steep low to mid-level lapse rates will contribute to a risk
    for strong downdrafts capable of producing at least isolated severe
    gusts (60-80 mph). Considered adding a Slight Risk based on
    scattered thunderstorm coverage moving into the lower deserts. But,
    given ongoing cloud cover across parts of central/southeast AZ and a
    tendency for the mid-level easterly flow to gradually weaken through
    the evening, confidence in scattered severe gusts occurring remains

    to severe storms are still expected this afternoon and evening
    across the Mid MS Valley. Damaging gusts remain the primary risk but
    a few instances of hail as possible as well.

    Strengthening low to mid-level southerly flow is anticipated from
    the southern High Plains through the Mid MO Valley overnight.
    Associated warm-air advection will contribute to scattered to
    numerous thunderstorms from eastern KS across central MO into
    west-central IL. Elevated buoyancy and moderate to strong shear
    within the cloud-bearing layer will support the potential strong to
    severe storms capable of isolated large hail and damaging gusts.

    ...AZ...
    Recent surface observations reveal a reservoir of low to mid 60s
    dewpoints across southern AZ. Additional heating/mixing will likely
    drop these dewpoints into the 50s later this afternoon, while also
    eroding the remaining convective inhibition and supporting moderate
    instability (i.e. MLCAPE from 1000 to 1500 J/kg). Given underlying
    questions about convective evolution as the storms move west off the
    high terrain, uncertainty regarding overall storm coverage and
    intensity remains. This uncertainty precludes introducing higher
    wind probabilities. That being said, the risk for isolated severe
    gusts (60-80 mph) remains, particularly if a forward-propagating

    convection. Current expectations are for at least isolated strong to
    severe thunderstorms to develop later this afternoon and evening in
    the gradually destabilizing airmass, with sufficient deep-layer
    shear forecast to support some updraft organization. Occasional hail
    and damaging winds may occur with the stronger cores, but evolution
    into one or more bowing clusters remains uncertain. A stronger
    signal exists for scattered to numerous thunderstorms to develop
    late this evening into early Thursday morning across eastern KS into
    MO in a strengthening low-level warm advection regime, with a
    continued severe hail/wind threat possible given ample MUCAPE and
    strong shear forecast in the cloud-bearing layer.

    ...Arizona...
    A seasonably moist low-level airmass (with surface observations
    generally in the low to mid 60s) will undergo further heating
    through late afternoon. Orographic lift should favor convection
    developing over the higher terrain and gradually spreading into the
    lower deserts this evening, as modest mid-level easterly flow
    persists to the south of upper ridging centered over the Southwest.
    Very steep low to mid-level lapse rates will contribute to a risk
    for strong downdrafts capable of producing at least isolated severe
    gusts (60-80 mph). Considered adding a Slight Risk based on
    scattered thunderstorm coverage moving into the lower deserts. But,
    given ongoing cloud cover across parts of central/southeast AZ and a
    tendency for the mid-level easterly flow to gradually weaken through
    the evening, confidence in scattered severe gusts occurring remains
    too low for an upgrade at this time.

    ...Southern High Plains...
    Weak post-frontal low-level upslope flow into the Raton Mesa
    vicinity will favor widely scattered convective development across
    the southern High Plains by mid to late afternoon. Modest
    west-northwesterly mid-level flow will favor motions to the
    east-southeast into the adjacent High Plains along/near a surface
    cold front. With steep lapse rates and a relatively dry sub-cloud
    layer expected, evaporative cooling will probably result in a few
    storms being capable of isolated severe gusts. A gust of 75+ mph may
    occur given the very well mixed boundary layer. Isolated, marginally
    severe hail may also occur with the initial cells that develop.

    located from far southern Kansas northeastward into Missouri and
    Illinois. Scattered thunderstorms are ongoing on the cool side of
    the boundary in northern Missouri. Along and to the south of the
    front, surface dewpoints are in the 70s F, and the RAP has MLCAPE in
    the 1500 to 2500 J/kg range. In addition, the WSR-88D VWP at St.
    Louis has 0-6 km shear around 30 knots, and veering winds with
    height in the lowest 1 Km above ground level. This environment will
    be sufficient for isolated severe wind gusts and hail this evening.
    However, forecast soundings have poor lapse rates which will keep
    any severe threat localized.

    ...Southern High Plains...
    Mid-level flow is west-northwesterly over much of the High Plains
    this evening. A small pocket of moderate instability is analyzed by
    the RAP over southeastern Colorado. Thunderstorms are ongoing to the
    south of the instability max over northeastern New Mexico. These
    storms will move east-southeastward into the northwestern Texas
    Panhandle and western Oklahoma Panhandle this evening. MLCAPE around
    1000 J/kg with 0-6 km shear in the 30 to 40 knot range, along with
    steep low to mid-level lapse rates could be enough for isolated
    severe gusts and hail.

    ...Southern Arizona...
    The latest RAP analysis shows moderate instability over most of
    southern Arizona, where MLCAPE is estimated in the 1000 to 2000 J/kg
    range. Thunderstorms are developing in the higher terrain of eastern
    Arizona, and these storms will move west-southwestward across
    southern Arizona this evening. RAP forecast sounding at Tuscon early
    this evening have 0-3 km lapse rates in the 8 to 8.5 C/km range,
    along with surface temperature-dewpoint spreads exceeding 30 degrees

    lower 70s F. As surface temperatures warm during the day, moderate
    instability will develop along and near the front, with the RAP
    forecasting MLCAPE to increase into the 2000 to 3000 J/kg range.
    During the afternoon, low-level convergence will become focused near
    the front with scattered thunderstorm development taking place from
    southern Kansas into southwest Missouri. These storms will move
    southeastward into northern Oklahoma and far northwestern Arkansas
    by the early to mid evening.

    In addition to the moderate instability, RAP forecast soundings
    early this evening near the front have 0-6 km shear in the 35 to 40
    knot range with 0-3 km lapse rates near 8 C/km. This environment
    will support a severe threat. A mixed mode is expected with
    supercells and multicell line segments both possible. Supercells
    will be capable of severe wind gusts and hail, while the stronger
    line segments will be associated with primarily a wind-damage
    threat. The severe threat could persist into the mid to late
    evening.

    ...Mid-Atlantic/New York/Far Western New England...
    Mid-level flow will be southwesterly over the Northeast today. At
    the surface, a trough will be located from the Atlantic Coastal
    Plains of Virginia north-northeastward into the southeastern New
    York. As surface temperatures warm today, thunderstorms will develop
    in the foothills of the Appalachians, moving east-northeastward into
    the lower elevations and toward the surface trough. Surface
    dewpoints near the trough will be in the lower to mid 70s F, which
    will contribute to moderate destabilization by early afternoon.
    MLCAPE is forecast to peak in the 2000 to 3000 J/kg range, which
    combined with steep low-level lapse rates will support an isolated

    from the mid MS Valley and lower MO Valley into the OK-KS border
    region. Much of this activity is located to the north of a residual
    front and outflow draped from the TX Panhandle east-northeast into
    the mid MS Valley. South of the boundary, an appreciably moist
    airmass, featuring 50s F dewpoints west to lower 70s east, will heat
    in areas void of convection and related cloud debris. It is
    uncertain how much influence morning showers/storms will have across
    the Slight Risk area. Nonetheless, model forecast soundings show
    moderate destabilization occurring by mid-late afternoon across much
    of this region. Isolated to widely scattered storms will
    preferentially develop near the effective front/outflow. Some storm organization is possible with the main threat being isolated to
    widely scattered severe gusts. Have adjusted the level 1 intensity
    for wind to northern OK westward into the southern High Plains where

    Isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms capable of
    producing hail and damaging winds are possible across parts of the
    southern Plains into the Ozarks this evening and overnight. More
    isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across portions
    of the central Plains and Mid-Atlantic/Northeast this evening.

    ...Southern Plains/Ozarks...
    Clusters of isolated to scattered thunderstorms will continue to
    emerge across southern Plains and portions of the Ozarks this
    evening and into the overnight hours. Recent radar mosaics and
    surface observations show the gradual decay of a cluster across
    southwest MO as the attendant cold pool continues to expand and
    undercut convection. Some lingering hail, and perhaps damaging wind,
    threat will persist with this activity through roughly 03-05 UTC
    given the proximity to ample buoyancy and modest deep-layer wind
    shear on the south/southwest flank of the cold pool.

    Further west, thunderstorm development is ongoing across southwest
    KS and southeast CO along zones of low-level confluence. Additional thunderstorm development is anticipated through late evening as
    convection continues to cluster and grow upscale in tandem with an
    increase in the nocturnal jet. The past several runs of the HRRR and
    RRFS both depict the emergence of a loosely organized MCS across
    this region with the potential for significant wind gusts. Given the
    trends in both satellite/radar and model guidance, confidence is
    sufficiently high to introduce focused 15% wind probabilities.

    Additional thunderstorm development is expected across the greater
    Emporia, KS area later this evening on the eastern periphery of the
    nocturnal jet and along the western edge of the MO cold pool. Steep
    lapse rates and sufficient deep-layer shear will support organized
    convection that will likely pose a threat for large hail, and
    perhaps sporadic downburst winds. A secondary corridor of higher
    severe potential may emerge across eastern KS overnight, but the
    expectation for clustered storm modes should act to modulate storm longevity/intensity and precludes higher probabilities.

    ...Eastern North Dakota into northwest Minnesota...
    Convection developing along a pre-frontal trough in southeast ND and
    northern MN has exhibited periods of strong VII and cold cloud-top
    temperatures indicative of severe convection. This activity has
    mainly been focused within a corridor of low to mid 60s dewpoints
    where effective bulk shear is around 35-40 knots and MLCAPE is
    likely between 1500-2500 J/kg, based on a combination of RAP
    mesoanalyses and by modifying the 00 UTC ABR RAOB. Latest guidance
    has hinted that additional convection is possible overnight as a
    cloud front pushes east and impinges on this narrow, but unstable,
    warm sector.

    ...Carolinas into the Mid-Atlantic...
    Isolated clusters of strong thunderstorms remain across the region
    as of 01 UTC. However, most convection has exhibited signs of
    gradual weakening over the past two hours. Although some localized
    damaging wind threat may linger for the next hour or so, continued
    nocturnal stabilization should further limit thunderstorm coverage

    expected from the mid-Missouri Valley into the Lake Superior region
    as well as across parts of the southern High Plains and central
    Plains.

    ...Synopsis...
    00 UTC upper-air analyses and latest GOES water-vapor imagery depict
    several perturbations within a low-amplitude upper trough in place
    over the central CONUS. The first of these perturbations is analyzed
    over the mid-MS Valley and is expected to migrate east towards the
    Mid-Atlantic region by mid-afternoon. A more pronounced shortwave
    trough is evident over central Canada into the northern Plains. This
    feature, along with an attendant surface low and trailing cold
    front, will move eastward through the day, reaching the Great Lakes
    region by tonight. Strong to severe thunderstorm chances will
    primarily be associated with these synoptic features, though more
    localized corridors of strong/severe thunderstorms may emerge across
    the southern High Plains and parts of the Ozarks associated with
    outflow boundaries from ongoing convection.

    ...Mid-Atlantic...
    The weak upper perturbation currently over the MS Valley is forecast
    to reach the central Appalachians/Mid-Atlantic region by
    mid-afternoon. Strong heating of an seasonally moist air mass
    (dewpoints in the low to mid 70s) will compensate for otherwise
    meager mid-level lapse rates and support MLCAPE values of 1000-2000
    J/kg with minimal capping by early afternoon. A combination of weak
    synoptic lift aided by localized orographic ascent should promote
    isolated to scattered thunderstorm development during the 18-20 UTC
    period. Most CAM guidance depicts a reasonably strong signal for
    thunderstorm clustering and upscale growth as storms spread
    northeast towards the I-95 corridor around peak heating. Although
    winds through the lowest 2-3 km will remain fairly modest, steep
    low-level lapse rates and around 25 knots of effective bulk shear
    should promote loosely organized clusters/lines with embedded swaths
    of damaging winds.

    ...Mid-Missouri Valley into the Lake Superior region...
    Thunderstorm development along the cold front is expected early this
    morning, possibly as early as 12-14 UTC across portions of eastern
    MN. This early activity will likely be elevated in nature, but 30-35
    knot mid-level flow should support adequate hodograph elongation for
    a few organized cells capable of severe hail. With time, diurnal heating/destabilization downstream and persistent forcing along the
    front should promote steady intensification and upscale growth of
    convection with a transition to primarily a wind risk across WI and
    the Upper Peninsula of MI. Further south, more isolated thunderstorm
    coverage across southern MN, IA, and eastern NE may support a
    supercell or two with an attendant threat for large hail as well as
    severe wind.

    ...Southern High Plains into the Ozarks...
    Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across northeast NM
    into the TX Panhandle this afternoon - driven by either orographic
    ascent along the Sange de Cristo mountains and/or the Raton Mesa or
    lift along a residual outflow boundary associated with an ongoing,
    but fairly confined, MCS across the northern TX Panhandle (as of 06
    UTC). Regardless of the forcing mechanism, convection developing
    across this region will mature in an environment featuring fairly
    weak wind shear, but a deeply-mixed boundary layer conducive for
    severe downbursts. Despite considerable variance in storm placement
    and coverage in latest CAM ensembles, the consistent signal for
    severe downbursts warrants low-end severe wind probabilities.

    Further east into eastern OK and the Ozarks, a focused corridor of thunderstorms will likely emerge on the outflow boundary of a
    convective cluster developing across eastern KS (as of 06 UTC). Some
    CAM solutions hint that sporadic large hail and/or damaging
    downbursts will be possible with this activity, but considerable
    uncertainty on where and how intense this activity will be limits
    confidence on introducing additional risk areas.

    Elevated convection is expected to develop across portions of
    northern NE and southern SD during the overnight hours tonight as
    isentropic ascent increases in tandem with a modest intensification
    of a low-level jet. Low-level moistening through 850 mb under a
    plume of 7-8 C/km mid-level lapse rates should promote a adequate
    buoyancy few robust updrafts (though confidence in storm coverage is
    limited due to the weak nature of the forcing for ascent). However,
    strong shear across the region will likely promote organized

    destabilizing boundary layer and scattered thunderstorm development
    this afternoon. A few thunderstorm clusters will probably evolve
    through the late afternoon into the early evening as this activity
    moves through the I-95 corridor. Isolated strong to locally severe
    gusts (i.e., 50-60 mph) capable of scattered wind damage will be the
    primary threat with the stronger cores.

    ...Mid-Missouri Valley into the Lake Superior region...
    Water-vapor imagery this morning shows a mid-level shortwave trough
    moving southeastward over the Red River Valley towards the Upper
    Great Lakes later today. In response to forcing for ascent
    associated with the disturbance, a couple of ongoing thunderstorm
    clusters will probably continue this morning. There is low
    confidence in the evolution of these clusters and an associated
    severe risk. Nonetheless, as a cold front continues to push
    southeast across the Upper Midwest later today, additional storm
    development is likely but details are nebulous at this time. Model
    guidance indicates a greater overlap of CAPE/shear may focus across
    western IA later this afternoon. Will re-evaluate in subsequent
    outlook updates for whether a mesoscale corridor can be identified
    with a locally greater severe risk within the larger Marginal Risk
    denoting isolated hail/wind potential.

    ...Southern High Plains into the Ozarks...
    Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across northeast NM
    into the TX Panhandle this afternoon. Relatively high uncertainty
    remains regarding storm placement removed from the higher terrain of
    northeast NM. Regardless, ample heating of an adequately moist but
    deepening boundary layer will support a thermodynamic profile

    Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will persist for a few more
    hours across parts of eastern NM into the TX Panhandle and far
    west-central OK. Severe wind gusts will be the main hazards with
    this activity given the hot, well-mixed boundary layer. Some of the
    stronger storms could sporadically produce large hail. Overall
    severe risk should gradually wane with loss of daytime heating after

    Further southwest, isolated thunderstorms moving off higher terrain

    Widely scattered thunderstorms will continue for a few more hours

    A conditional large hail risk remains late tonight/early Saturday
    across parts of southern SD into northern NE. Forecast guidance
    still suggests isolated elevated thunderstorms will develop within a
    corridor of favorable elevated instability and 35+ kt effective
    shear magnitudes. If storms develop, large hail will be possible.

    ...OH Valley into the Mid-Atlantic...

    Locally gusty winds may continue another hour or two with a
    thunderstorm cluster of WV and another cluster in CT. Thunderstorm
    activity may persist across parts of the Midwest toward the

    and uncertain. Broad northwesterly flow aloft will modestly
    strengthen by late afternoon/early evening as several shortwave
    impulses migrate through the base of an upper low/trough centered
    over central Canada. Height falls are expected to be weak, and warm
    mid-level temperatures will pose capping issues. Nevertheless,
    surface troughing across the northern/central High Plains will
    result in south/southeasterly low-level flow, transporting 60s F
    dewpoints northward across the central Plains and MO Valley ahead of
    a southward sagging surface front oriented across ND and northern MN
    late in the period. Increasing boundary layer moisture beneath steep
    midlevel lapse rates will support moderate to strong
    destabilization.

    Several areas of convection may develop during the late
    afternoon/evening near the surface trough, and overnight near the southward-sagging surface front. Given weak large-scale ascent and
    warm midlevels, it remains uncertain where storm development is most
    likely and how storm coverage will evolve. With an increasing
    low-level jet across the central Plains during the nighttime hours,
    some convection could develop atop a capping inversion, or along the
    surface front near the ND/SD border. Isolated large hail is possible
    with this activity. If surface-based convection can develop within

    Additional high-based convection is possible across CO and western

    into southern portions of the Northeast will yield around 2000 J/kg
    MLCAPE by early afternoon. Of particular note is seemingly adequate
    strength of flow between 700-250 mb for organized line segments.
    Given the relatively high PW environment (1.75-2.0 inches),
    expecting a few clusters to evolve this afternoon with an attendant
    risk for strong to locally severe gusts (50-65 mph). Have
    expanded/increased severe-wind probabilities into southern New
    England and southward into the Chesapeake Bay vicinity. Marginally
    severe hail may also occur with the stronger cells before excessive
    outflow leads to more linear structures as this activity pushes east
    towards the coast by the early evening.

    ...Northern/Central Plains into MN/IA/MO...
    Radar/satellite mosaic shows a cluster of strong to locally severe thunderstorms over the NE Sandhills this morning. This activity may
    continue southeast this morning but weaken as it moves across
    central NE. Above average uncertainty/low confidence for this
    forecast is due in part to weak to negligible forcing features and
    large model spread on potential evolution of isolated to widely
    scattered storms later today into tonight. Nonetheless, a strongly
    unstable airmass is forecast to develop by early afternoon across
    much of the region with 60s to lower 70s boundary layer dewpoints
    beneath steep 700-500 mb lapse rates.

    Several areas of convection may develop during the late
    afternoon/evening near the surface trough, and overnight near the southward-sagging surface front. Weak convergence along early day
    outflow may rejuvenate convection or lead to additional isolated

    risk for damaging gusts. This activity is likely to continue to
    spread eastward across the Lake Michigan vicinity through the
    afternoon on the nose a of modest low-level jet and along a surface
    front oriented across southern WI and Lower MI. This activity could
    intensify as is moves into a destabilizing airmass by midday.

    Additional development is possible within the moisture rich warm
    sector across northern IL/IN along the southern flank of ongoing
    convection and/or outflow. Strong to extreme instability is
    forecast, while vertically veering wind profiles support 30+ kt
    effective shear magnitudes. Low-level SRH also will be enhanced
    along the surface boundary. While damaging winds are expected to be
    the primary hazard with convection, some risk for hail and a tornado
    or two also will exist through evening. Depending on the evolution
    of morning convection, it is possible higher probabilities will be
    needed in subsequent outlooks.

    ...Dakotas and western NE...

    A surface front is expected to develop southward across the central
    Plains, becoming oriented across northern KS by tonight. Low-level
    warm advection atop the boundary, and surface winds becoming south/southeasterly with time will maintain 60s dewpoints across the
    region. Within this post-frontal upslope regime, moderate
    northwesterly flow aloft will persist. A modest south/southwesterly
    low-level jet is also forecast to develop during the evening hours.

    developing to the south/west of this convectively augmented
    baroclinic zone.

    Model forecast soundings show ample CAPE aided by the northern rim
    of lower to mid 70s F surface dewpoints into northern portions of
    IL/IN. Adequately strong and vertically veering wind profiles will
    support 30-40 kt effective shear magnitudes. Low-level SRH may also
    be locally boosted in the vicinity of the warm front/effective
    boundary, which could then play a role in severe potential if a
    supercell or linear segments were to develop and favorably interact
    within this corridor. Rather poor depiction of this morning's
    thunderstorm evolution (i.e., 00z HREF members) casts large
    uncertainty where a couple of more intense thunderstorm clusters
    will ultimately develop. It seems the greatest potential for severe
    will be centered over northern IL later this afternoon through the
    evening, but confidence remains low regarding details and the need
    for spatial refinements of the severe risk area and the need for
    potential higher probabilities.

    ...Dakotas and western NE...
    A surface front is expected to push southward across the central
    Plains, becoming oriented across northern KS by tonight. Low-level
    warm advection atop the boundary, and surface winds becoming south/southeasterly with time will maintain 60s dewpoints across the
    region. Within this post-frontal upslope regime, a reservoir of
    mainly 60s F dewpoints will reside beneath moderate northwesterly
    flow aloft. Supercell wind profiles and steep low-level lapse rates
    will support initial storms capable of large hail and severe gusts,
    especially as this activity over the western Dakotas moves
    southeastward into richer moisture. A small cluster may eventually
    evolve during the overnight with an attendant risk for severe gusts
    and perhaps large hail.

    ...Southern Appalachians...
    Scattered thunderstorm development is expected over higher terrain
    within a seasonally moist and unstable airmass. Steepening
    low-level lapse rates and high PW values may support locally strong
    gusts with wet microbursts through early evening.

    ...AZ...
    Modest easterly mid/upper flow will persist across the region on the
    southern periphery of an upper high over the Four Corners. Another
    day of hot conditions will promote steep lapse rates and modest destabilization. As convection develops over higher terrain and

    widespread 2000+ J/kg MLCAPE amid 50+ kts of effective bulk shear
    may support a couple of severe multicells or supercells should any
    storms manage to become sustained this afternoon or evening. The
    Slight Risk along/south of the Great Lakes was expanded slightly
    eastward into northern OH to account for some boundary layer
    destabilization ahead of an approaching MCS, where a few damaging
    gusts are possible.

    Otherwise, the previous forecast remains on track, with only minor

    Damaging wind and hail will be possible with convection moving
    across western NE this evening. As ongoing storms track
    east/southeast, they will encounter richer low-level moisture and
    increasing instability. While stronger capping persisted with
    eastward extent, even elevated storms will pose a severe risk as
    they track across WW 0549.

    Severe potential is less certain with northward extent across the
    Dakotas. Low-level moisture will increase during the evening and
    overnight hours, but currently, instability remains weak and capping
    is strong. Isolated strong cells over northeast MT will continue to
    develop southeast into limited instability but stronger vertical
    shear. If storms can be maintained and additional development occurs
    later this evening/overnight isolated hail and strong wind gusts
    will be possible.

    Similar to previous days, easterly midlevel flow will support
    convection moving westward off higher terrain and across the lower

    ...Synopsis...

    A belt of enhanced west/northwesterly flow aloft will overspread the
    northern Plains to the Midwest and southern New England
    today/tonight. Only modest height falls are forecast at best.
    However, several convectively enhanced vorticity maxima are forecast
    to migrate through this upper flow regime, focusing several areas of
    severe storm potential today into tonight from the northern Plains
    to the upper Ohio Valley and parts of the Mid-Atlantic.

    ...IL to the Mid-Atlantic...

    Early day thunderstorms may move across parts of the Midwest this
    morning, but should generally be sub-severe. By midday, convection
    could intensify within a couple of corridors. The first being the
    upper Ohio Valley/PA/western NY. Thunderstorm clusters will pose a
    risk for damaging winds and hail within a moderately unstable
    airmass as convection spreads east toward the Mid-Atlantic.

    Additional thunderstorm development is expected later in the
    afternoon associated with another shortwave impulse spreading east
    from IL into IN/OH. This activity will develop within strong
    instability and rich boundary layer moisture. Modestly steep
    midlevel lapse rates and effective shear greater than 40 kt will
    support initial supercells. With time, sufficient clustering is
    expected and bowing segments will be possible. Damaging wind and
    hail will be the primary hazards, though a tornado or two also could
    occur.

    ...Dakotas into Iowa...

    Southeasterly low-level flow will transport mid/upper 60s dewpoints
    north and west across SD, with 70s dewpoints common with southeast
    extent across NE/IA/southern MN. This will support a corridor of
    strong to extreme instability across the region. While coverage
    remains uncertain, most guidance develops at least isolated
    thunderstorms by evening. Elongated hodographs amid favorable deep
    shear will support supercells and bows capable of large hail and
    damaging winds. With time, it is possible sufficient clustering
    occurs and upscale growth into a bowing MCS is possible as a
    low-level jet develops overnight. If this occurs, a swath of
    damaging winds is possible across parts of SD into northwest IA,
    oriented along the stronger instability gradient.

    ...NE/CO/KS...

    Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop near a surface
    trough across western NE/northeast CO by late afternoon/early
    evening. This activity will spread east/southeast. Steep low-level
    lapse rates will support strong outflow gusts and perhaps hail with
    this activity.

    Mid/upper easterly flow will persist today amid plentiful moisture
    and strong heating. This will support thunderstorm development once
    again across higher terrain. As storms propagate westward off the

    ...Synopsis...
    Another highly uncertain and complex forecast with mesoscale
    convective dependencies apparent this forecast update. Water-vapor
    imagery implies a belt of west-northwest mid to high-level flow
    extending across the northern High Plains east through much of the
    Midwest, and to the north of a flattened mid-level ridge extending
    from the Four Corners to FL. Embedded within the flow, a
    convectively augmented disturbance over the southern Great Lakes
    will move east into PA by early this afternoon. Another minor
    perturbation over southwest MT this morning will quickly move into
    the Dakotas by early evening and probably influence the severe
    threat from SD into adjacent parts of IA/MN overnight.

    ...IL to the Mid-Atlantic...
    Radar mosaic this morning shows an organized line segment moving
    east along the OH-Lake Erie shoreline and a couple of other
    thunderstorm clusters over western OH and south-central PA. The
    Detroit, MI WSR-88D VAD showed a mid-level speed max associated with
    the convectively augmented vorticity max moving east across the Lake
    Erie vicinity. Gradual intensification of storms is expected this
    morning as the boundary layer heats downstream across OH into PA and
    the Mid-Atlantic states (refer to MCD 1892 for short-term details
    regarding the northeast OH thunderstorms). Of particular note, the
    12 UTC Pittsburgh, PA and Wilmington, OH raobs showed a moderate to
    very unstable airmass (1800-2700 J/kg MLCAPE, respectively) in place
    over the upper OH Valley. Severe gusts capable of scattered wind
    damage will be possible through the afternoon with any stronger
    thunderstorms and clusters of storms. Farther west, models show
    storm redevelopment perhaps centered over northern IN/IL later this afternoon/evening. Shear/buoyancy profiles will support organized
    storms, including supercells and linear clusters. Damaging wind and
    hail will be the primary hazards, though a tornado or two also could
    occur.

    ...Dakotas into MN/IA...
    Similar to previous forecast thinking, southeasterly low-level flow
    will aid in the transport of seasonably rich moisture (mainly 60s F
    surface dewpoints) north and west into SD. Model forecast soundings
    show large buoyancy developing by mid afternoon within the
    aforementioned moist plume. The weak impulse implied by model
    guidance moving into western SD may enable at least isolated to
    potentially scattered storms developing towards early evening over
    western and central SD. The 00z ECMWF and 00z HREF consensus
    suggest a linear cluster evolves during the evening and grows
    upscale into an MCS during the overnight moving east-southeast along
    a residual frontal zone. Have included an intensity level-1 to
    denote this conditional but significant wind risk if this forecast
    scenario occurs.

    ...AZ...
    Mid/upper easterly flow will persist today amid plentiful moisture
    and strong heating. This will support thunderstorm development once
    again across higher terrain. Scattered storms are forecast to
    eventually develop with their cold pools coalescing over the lower
    desert. Based on the latest CAM guidance and inverted-V profiles
    with marginally supportive shear for loose storm organization, have
    upgraded a part of the lower desert into higher severe-wind
    probabilities. Widely scattered to scattered severe gusts 60-75 mph
    are possible with this activity.

    ...NE/CO/KS...
    Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop near a surface
    trough across western NE/northeast CO by late afternoon/early
    evening. As the high-based storms mature into possibly a small
    linear cluster and move into richer moisture with east extent, steep
    low- to mid-level lapse rates will support severe gusts (60-75 mph)
    and perhaps hail with this activity.
